Weapon buying

I'm apreciating this game more and more...i got really lost right off in the beginning..then i followed a short tips section on a game site..that i should sell all the stuff that is located in the house where you begin...give the ring to the guy who lost it...i now have one fancy armor plus everything needed..just one more thing...A WEAPON

i don't really understand it...in gothic it was kinda simple..you saw a weapon and you saw right away how much damage it would do..here you see

Chop
slash and something else...what is the most important? i'd like to stand a chance against enemies...

Choice of weapon attack

You can go to the options section and just select "always use best attack", o/w it depends on the direction you are physically moving.
