Use Direct 8.0, install Miles T32 Sound System, and the Goth

Gothic was crashing about as much as Windows 98 SE blue-screens (which is alot) until I did the following.

1) Uninstalled Direct X 8.1 and installed 8.0 in its place
2) Installed Miles T32 Sound System
3) Installed the Gothic Patch

It's been working like a charm since. It's crashed maybe 2-3 times in a whole month!

Try it dude! Otherwise you'll be restarting your computer every 4-5 minutes, attacking one minecrawler and then having the whole thing crash on you again.

For the first you need an (unsupported) tool, you cannot uninstall DirectX normally.
Secondly the Gothic Player-Kit updates the Miles Sound System (MSS) redistributables too.
Thirdly the Player-Kit contains the latest version too.

So it may be simpler to try the Gothic Player-Kit first.

Not really true... it's possible to do with an unsupported tool, but you can also:
1. enter the windows register (c:\windows\regedit)
2. go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >> Software >> Microsoft >>DirectX
3. in that key there is a voice:"Version: 4.0x.xx.xxxx" where x.xx.xxxx is your installed version (example: i've intalled version 4.08.01.0881 that's DirectX 8.1a Italian). Remove the voice "version" and try to install the old ones!

WORNING: i'm not responsible for crashes obtained for you've done changing your register! Know this: it works! If you want to try make first a backup of the register and then try!
Good Luck!
