computer crapped out

Well, I was up to killing the 4 dragons, killed one, computer locked up so I shut down. When I tried to boot back up ... nothing!

Ive known for a while the mother board was shot but have managed to keep it running (poorly but running). I have repartitioned the hard drive, reformatted, completely rebuilt the darn thing. But this time theres no hope. I ordered a new comp... a Dell, Dude ... but now will have to start my game all over again. <mutter mutter>

I hope the computer I ordered will handle this game better than my last one. The game was horrible with lagging and lock ups... but Im sure it was my comp. It had all the right specs, but it was a lemon from the time I bought it. Ill never have another HP!

The new one has:

Windows XP Pro
Pentium 4 2.80 GHz w/800 MHz Frontside Bus/HT technology
1 Gig Duel Channel DDR SDRAM at 400 MHz
80 Gig Hard Drive
Single drive 48XCD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo drive
128 MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Graphics Card
Sound Blaster Live 5.1 (D) Audio Card w/Dolby

If anyone knows of any bugs or problems with this game and those specs, please let me know. I still have time to change my order if need be. Gawd, I hope the game works well with a new comp! Would hate to give it up before I can finish it!

Thanks

With your new computer you would play Gothic2 verey - very smooth.
Enjoy and welcome to the forum.

In chapter 4 you've done (nearly) all of the guild specific quests, consider playing with a new class! have fun!

I have p4 1.7 GHz, I have had no problems except on loading worlds so far. Very smooth for me. I get a little choppy in the city and the moastery but have my view at 300. The city was meant for view of 100 or so.

Sounds like you'll have no problems with the game with the new one.

Just thought you might want to know that the video card that is coming with your system is complete junk. The DDR 400 is great and should run Gothic 2 very smooth, but that video card benchmarks slower then a GeForce 4 ti 4200, just so you know. If you can afford it buy a radeon 9600XT - for the best performance/price ratio.

thanks for the tip

I had thought that the 5200 would be better than the 4200! I have a 4200 in the machine that crapped out. If the new one works like crap, Ill switch them over! I wish I would have asked this question sooner. I had the choice of a radion but chose the GeForce instead. I just checked to see if I could change that but its too late.

Thanks again, you guys are great! <s>

Most of the FX cards are benchmarking extremely low. I am a huge Nvidia fan so you know this isn't a biased opinion for ATI. I run a 4 computer network at home and all my cards are Nvidia, I just don't want anyone else to be as dissapointed as I was when I got my FX cards.

Heres a little list of how I rate the performance of cards out today.

1. ATI Radeon 9800 XT----------------------420.00
2. GeForce FX 5950 Ultra---------------------400.00
3. GeForce FX 5900 Ultra (52.14 drivers)----320.00
4. ATI Radeon 9700 Pro ---------------------220.00
5. ATI Radeon 9600 XT ---------------------- 160.00
6. GeForce FX 5700 Ultra --------------------- 250.00
7. GeForce 4 TI 4600--------------------------130.00
8. ATI Radeon 9600 Pro-----------------------160.00
9. ATI Radeon 9500 Pro-----------------------150.00
10. GeForce 4 TI 4400--------------------------110.00
11. Geforce 4 TI 4200---------------------------100.00
12. ATI Radeon 9500---------------------------130.00
13. GeForce FX 5600 Ultra----------------------160.00
14. ATI Radeon 9200---------------------------50.00
15. ATI Radeon 9600 SE------------------------100.00
16. GeForce FX 5200 Ultra----------------------70.00
17. ATI Radeon 9200 SE------------------------80.00

These are just my opinions, and i'm sure they will vary alot depending on the person. But my opinions are based off of benchmarks from Direct3D games, not opengl. The prices listed are prices I was able to find for the cards.

This is not a problem of the brand you choose. You simply shouldnīt buy a low end graphics card because those are too slow for adequate gaming. Stay in the middle and youīll do fine.

If you didnīt play Gothic 1 yet you should use your old Ti 4200. Itīs confirmed to work with G1.

@Daydream-Don't worry. My friend has a P4 2.8 ghz with 512mb of RAM and a GeForce FX 5200 and Gothic to runs with nary a hiccup. You'll be fine, especially considering that 1GB of ram. Besides, Gothic 2's engine is only an snazzed up version of its predecessor's, so a video card shouldn't be too much of a concern when playing this game. I'm playing Gothic 2 on a PIII 933 mhz with 384mb of RAM and a GeForce 2, and it's doing a respectable job.
