Don't know that I totally agree with this. Although I was familiar with the Wizardry franchise, Wiz8 is the only one I've bought. I'm told the Archives would be largely unplayable on a modern rig with Windows. Seems to me that (10 years after Wiz7) Wiz8 revived a good bit of forgotten interest in the franchise, as well as introducing a new "generation" of gamers to Wizardry. Were someone to release "playable Windows ports" of the back catalog, I'd buy...

It is backward compatible. I'm running a P3, 500 MHz, 128 Meg system and all games run fine. There are no system requirements listed anywhere in the manual, reference card or CD label. There is a program on it called Mo'Slo designed to slow the games down on modern systems to playable speeds, but it's not really needed IIRC - I tested all games off the CD.
