gothic2 addon... how different does it make the game

Is it different from the point you begin your adventure, it is it like once you pass a certain point, or even the last boss i original gothic2

The add-on main quest starts right at the start of GII, with additional minor quests, NPCs and enemies added throughout the original game. Game difficlty is raised by the add-on as well.
