Problem running on Matrox G400.. only option 1600x1200? |
|
I bought Morrowind over the weekend and it autodetected my Matrox G400 fine.. but only gives me an option for 1600x1200! The game is unplayable at this resolution, 3fps does not make a good gaming experience.
I have the latest DirectX, etc.
System specs:
Athlon Tbird 1.2
Asus A7V133
512MB CAS2 SDRAM
Matrox G400 32MB
Win2kPro SP2
SBLive!
3Com 3C905 NIC
2 IDE controllers... 4 hard drives
2 20gb drives in IDE RAID0, 40GB array
I have the latest drivers for EVERYTHING.
Please help me! I really don't want to return this game!

I fixed it!
There is an incompatibility between Morrowind and the custom monitor control panel in the Matrox PowerDesk drivers. The Matrox customization panel allows you to select custom refresh rates for each resolution under Windows. That's how I get 120hz vertical refresh in Q3, CounterStrike, etc. My refresh rate allows me to take better advantage of the framerates I'm using.
Morrowind apparently queries the available resolutions AND refresh rates when checking whether a resolution is available. If it doesn't match VESA standard refresh rates, it doesn't list the resolution.
By disabling my monitor profile and using standard refresh rates (70, 75, 85hz) all the other resolutions reappeared in the Morrowind video options dialog.
I'm now running 800x600 and appear to get 25-30fps inside and 15-20fps outside. I wouldn't call this good by any stretch of the imagination, but it's playable in a rudimentary sense. It pains me that I have to turn off shadows to be able to get even this result.
Anyway, all seems to be working finally.
Please let other Matrox owners know of this issue. The drivers are unified on Matrox products, so this should apply to all Matrox cards currently available for the PC, from the old G100 all the way through the G550 and the upcoming Parhelia.
Cheers!
