Do u know what really inspired Gothic 2? |
|
I reckon the Lord of the rings films that are just being released really effected and inspired the developers of gothic 2. I mean you hear the constant referal to "Evil2 and the story is about 1 man standing up to over wellming odds, like in lord of the rings, frodo standing up to Suaron. and look at the seekers, dark hooded figures roaming the country side seeking you, that is so much ripped from Lord of the rings.
of course i dont mind all this its quite cool, what do u lot think about it? |

It already was 1 man standing against great odds in gothic 1, it is just a follow up from that.
Many games have 1 hero that saves the world, LOR is not really 1 man, he has a few friends that help him. _________________ The original RED poster (retired now)

Hehe, PB's Mike Hoge once told us press people what had been a major influence in creating the GII Seekers... the Harry Potter novels. _________________ Jaz |

Yea…The seekers are pathetic indeed. Three hits with the bow and there toast! You would think beings from the nether world would be something to contend with… _________________ "That one hurt..."

Shmaugus, Im not really sure what you meant by your comments. Yes, its true that the digital orcs and goblins in the Lord of the Rings movies arent the first in terms of either movies or games. However, every major source I have read give Tolkien credit for introducing them into our literary culture. Monster like them had existed before in stories and legends, but Tolkien gave them the definitive name and description. Heck, even the inventors of D&D admit their creation was HEAVILY influenced (I would use the world copied, but Tolkien didnt have a problem with it, so neither do I ) by those books. So, in my opinion, G1 and G2 .... almost every medievel, fantasy creation since the 1950's is "based" or influenced by Mr. Tolkiens trilogy. |

ok now is where i get to point and laugh...
in the hobbit it refers to the monsters as goblins... you guys following?
in the next three books it refers to them as orcs... anyone else wanna laugh at the little flaw
and nowhere in any of his books does he give a definitive description of them, although i do agree he did introduce them into our literature, games, and movies but my point still stands he didnt invent the damn things |

You are right Shmaugus. I believe it was Grog the Neanderthal Caveman who first created the story of the Orc. He was late back to camp with the speared sabertooth tiger and he needed an excuse for his enraged mate. He started a grand tale about how these giant smelly Orcs tried to steal his food. However, after seeing Shelago wasn't buying it, ....... and realizing this was the Stone Age after all, he smashed her over the head with his club.
A common saying among writers is, "Everything's been done before, its all about telling it in a new way." I think Tolkien did a great job of describing Orcs and the other Middle Earth denizens. He took bits and pieces from older material and gave a definitive portrayal. For this I consider him the "creator" of Orcs and such. And I think that Jackson and Crew did an amazing job of transfering that image to the screen (just like I imagined reading the books as a child). But the fact that people are comparing G2 to LoTRs is a good sign to me... shows me its a quality product. |

ya wanna know what it tells me...
that although the movies and books were good they arent all that great, and who the hell reads nowadays (besides me)?
and that people are just desperate to compare something that they have just encountered and have no idea how to explain it to something that is old and beat (aka those damn books)! |
