Gothic really runs ALOT better now..almost without stutters in field...inside castle place at OC is still sloppy...anyway...the reason why gothic was so slow at times...broken ram...i had 512 ram now i only have 256...now my question...would it help to buy more ram ...i mean will the game run smoother? i hear alot of stuff from people that tell me...Ram is bullshit...if you have 256 ...you have enough ..higher than that is un-nessecary they say...but what is really true? cause i hate those slowdowns when i go past the 2 guards and enter the main area where that skeleton hangs..{castle place}

This game is mostly ram hungry. The more, the better.

More than 256mb ram is not bullshit because in some games like Everquest, you need at least 512mb for it to run well, and probably more is better, at least in that example.
Personally I am getting 1gb of ddr(plus a GF4 vid card) for my new system next month and can't wait to test Gothic on it(1600X1200 with all details maxed out hopefully).

256 mb 'used' the be okay'
You'll find that with the new operating systems and some of the new programs, that 256 gets eaten up quite quickly
i run 512 mb of pc133 and, well, usuallly just idleing in win2k will get me about 120 mb usage (23% of my entire memory size) But as soon as you start opening up applicaitons or games its amazing how quikcly it jumps over 256 and even up to 300-400 mb.
Ive never hit the 512 meg mark though except when compiling halflife maps. Even then its pretty close
But with all that said, 512 mb is better in every way possible, just make sure you're using an OS that can handle it (windows 95 cant handle that much, win98 has some problems with it unless you're using win 98 SE i believe)
I even encountered problems in winME with 512 mb
just experiment and find out

I use Windows XP pro, the problem with my pc was that the ram was broken{did i already said that?} i used to have 512 of ram but now only 256 cause the other half is broken, but i have guarantee on the ram block so i will go back to the store to get my new 256 ram once again, as soon as i find the papers to prove i have bought the ram there

if you get the chance, trade in both your 256 mb sticks and ask for one 512 mb cl2 stick
itll be faster memory

yeah
but it can help you in some ways
i mean
theres always the risk of incompatibilities between the ram, causing slower, or no performance at all
its usually better to just stick with one stick, it would also...theoreticlly, give you a tiny bit faster access time to the memory if its all as one (nothing that would be noticeable, but faster nonetheless, were talking nanoseconds ).
Butotherwise a singlestick is better
many places will trade you two 256 dimms for one 512
but if you aqsk for cl2 you may have to pay a bit extra since its faster memory

also...about it running slower in the old camp castle area. it may just be a problem with the game
trying to load to much maybe
i experience the same slowdowns when walking around inside the castle
but the game runs just peachy everywhere else

Credence is of course right. You have the following options if you want to get 512MB:
1.get another 256MB stick. Buy EXACTLY the same as your current module. Do not mix different modules.
2.trade the two modules for one bigger module. This option is slightly better.
3.see 1., buy CL2 modules. The L stands for latency. Lower latency results in faster access ==> more cycles in the same time ==> considerably more memory performance. Can make your whole system ~3% faster.
4. see 2., CL 2.

The best option is 4.

Whatever you do, ONLY buy major brand memory. Such modules have large stickers on the module with the manufacturer logo and detailed specs.
