Star Wars: KotOR Reviews @ Gamerankings, Xbox365

A pair of Star Wars KotOR reviews have been tossed up by Gamerankings and Xbox365. Starting with the Gamerankings review, they've awarded a score of 95% and here's a snip:
Also done right is the presentation – everything here is flawless by my scoring, and though I'm sure I could find something to nitpick at if I looked hard enough, I am not that jaded of a critic. Let's be clear – everything in the visuals, from the rusty old cantinas, to the magnificent skyscrapers of Taris, to the prairie lands of Dantooine are exactly as you may envision them in your head. Alien species of every kind walk around you and go about their business, making you feel like a part in something bigger than yourself. Said races all speak in their authentic film languages, and original music is present in the game that would fit right at home in Episode III. This is more than a great licensed product; this is a labor of love.
Moving along we come to the Xbox365 review where they've headed straight to a perfect score of 10/10 and the ultimate title:
In my opinion this is the greatest RPG ever. The combination of the Star Wars franchise, the talent of Bioware and the infinite resources at LucasArts has created the perfect RPG. This game is a console seller. It will also turn casual RPG gamers (like myself) into fanatics. I love this game, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend that everyone I know purchase it. This is truly an amazing game that captures your imagination and makes you feel like part of the Star Wars universe.

Skeptical about Rave Reviews

I'm think the people writing these glaring reviews need to wait a week or get some sleep before judging the game... All too often I am ecstatic about a new game (for example, Freelancer and GTA3:VC) and it's only a matter of time before the inadequacies (sp?) take on more weight than the things that the game does well. Feh, well, I DID play all the way through Freelancer. I guess every game has a half-life (no pun intended.)

Still, I may play KOTOR just to see for myself, if nothing else, then just to play a LucasArts game. It's been years!

I've played this one on Xbox and I would have to say that there are very few inadequacies here, and that for the most part the game deserves most of the scores its been posting. However, I question a lot of the glowing summations made in some of these reviews (e.g. greatest rpg ever, perfect rpg).

Keep in mind that these reviews are coming largely from console gamers where this type of gameplay has not been seen (definitely not on the Xbox). So what is revolutionary for that platform may very well not be revolutionary for those more familiar with the genre and its various iterations on the pc.

IMHO this game is nothing more than a very adroit combination of slightly modified and simplified 3rd edition AD&D rules (as seen in NWN), a better version of the combat mechanics seen in the Summoner games, and a surprisingly strong story. That being said the game seems to play like more than the sum of its parts.

There are many ways I would have liked certain aspects of the game to be different (e.g. more complex combat mechanics and control, less linearity, etc,), and this game would not make my personal top ten list. However, this is still a very solid game and worth checking out on the PC. Just dont be taken in by the hyperbole and I dont think you will be dissappointed.

I agree. I don't trust console ports, but this isn't a simple port... they are taking their sweet time to make a PC version. Computer and console games until recently (PS2 Memory cards?) have been very, very different kinds of games. Maybe the "console people" are just overwhelmed by the new game styles. Heh, well, they even had Manian Mansion for the old NES

The "surprisingly strong story" is what will make or break this game for me... as long as the action is there and it's as fun as they say. I said it once and I'll say it again, Deus Ex totally ruined PC games for me. I can't wait for DX:IW.

Dagoo7, what's your argument with the linearity? They say it's very non-linear, but, of course, any narrative game will have to follow some linear story....

Any word when the PC version is due? Something more precise than "This Fall?"
