| Umm, my cloths is gone... |

So far this has happened twice to me, and I can't figure out why. The first time was before I really started to persue the main quest. I was wearing a full suit of steel plate, with a tower shield and an ebony broad sword. There was a price on my head, so I decided to turn myself in and pay the fee. As soon as I do, I look at my inventory, and my armor is no longer there! I am left in my blacks, with only my shield, sword, and my right pouldron.
It just happened again, when I took off my armor (just a few minutes ago) my pants were missing! Is anyone else noticeing stuff just vanishing on them? I can't think of any reason why this would happen. |

Did you steal any of the armor?

Yes, I have heard that if you steel something and they know about it, they will take it from you. |

Cant you just drop all your items before confessing to a guard?

Yes you can or store it somewhere. If you steal anything at all then the guards will take it even if your crime isnt for stealing. So if you have something valueable and you know you didnt buy it then put it somewhere safe before turning yourself into the guards.  |

Just a warning, drop all your items that you do not want to loose. Because if you only drop the items you have stolen the guards will take OTHER items. This happened to me. I dropped all my stolen armor and stuff and turned myself in. The result was that most of the other things (scrolls, potions etc.) were taken by the guard even they were legally bought and found as a loot from dungeons etc.

I lost all the soul gems i'd jacked from the woman at the mages guild  because i got caught punching someone

The lesson here is:
Don't steal if you want to be a nice guy and turn yourself in or think you might get caught some time.
OR
Give in to your thieving nature, join the guild, and talk to the guys who can pay off your debt for half its cost and no loss of items.
OR
Find the guard 'base'. Find the evidence box. Break in, and steal all your stuff back.
