How do you use soul gems?

I have a "petty soul gem" and when i try to equip it to use it, it says "you cannot put a soul gem in the soul gem slot that doesn't have a soul in it" so how do i get a soul in it?

I am curious about this too, I know you need to be a Myticism spell caster and you get a spell called Soul Trap that will put the soul of someone who has been klled in a certain time into the gem. So I bet if you cast it on something, then kill it you will fill up the soul gem. What you can do with it, I have no idea...

there are enchanters which will help you put together, say a gem and a sword, for the right price of course
