I don't want to save the world anymore.

A funny thing happened to me on the way to uninstalling Morrowind today. I was perfectly ready to site the faults of the game as the origin of my discontent. Slow framerate, personality-free NPCs, blah blah blah. It struck me as I realized that it probably wouldn't matter how good Morrowind was, I still wouldn't like it.

This feeling has been growing since I finished BG1 and especially since I finished BG2. It was especially present when I was playing Wizardry 8. Multiplayer such as Diablo 2 was o.k., but most of the people seemed like fellow ghosts in a world that's been beaten to death many times over. Diablo 2 also seems fairly brainless; lotsa teenagers who just play to get stuff for their characters. Maybe I needed to make some friends here to join up with.

I simply don't care as much for playing games by myself... especially games where my character becomes the center of the universe... especially games where in between fighting the growing Evil, NPCs really need me to be the Orkin(tm) Man, the Fed-Ex(tm) guy, and so on. I've found that the better-scripted the NPCs are, the more I play the game... but it still has limits. Most of the time, the game ends well AFTER I've stopped caring about the townsfolk, villains, and fellow team-mates.

I can admit this to myself now: The only reason that I played Wizardry 8 for as long as I did was because the characters had funny comments that I enjoyed hearing.

Hmm. There's got to be a balance somewhere. I've already paid for Neverwinter Nights and am psyched about getting it tomorrow, but I'm starting to think that maybe my days with RPGs are coming to an end. I don't want to save the world anymore. Sadly, I had more fun reading the Morrowind forum here than actually playing Morrowind.

Interesting....I can relate to what your saying about Diablo 2, and not wanting to save the world anymore. Now that you mention it, I can't recall an RPG in which the main objective isn't saving the world from impending evil. (I can't think of any only because I am trying to.)

Anyways don't say that about not playing RPG's anymore! Although I do believe that online RPG's can get rather boring, but only because of the fact that I've never had a true companion. Someone that is always there, and always wanting to play. I would have stuck with D2 alot longer had I known people for more than 1 or 2 nights before they mysteriously disappeared. I've payed for NWN already also, and I'll have it tommorow too. I'm going to post my account name right here as soon as I make it. This way the next time you think that your "RPG days are coming to an end" just find me and we will game. RPG's arn't something that I'm going to just drop so easily, although I have yet to find a multi-player RPG that appeals to me very highly. Maybe NWN will be that game.

Just take a short break from crpg's. Try something like Serious Sam
or Max Payne to let out some agression. I'm playing Max Payne right now and even though it's very overrated, it's fun to do nothing but blow people away without a conscience. By the time I'm finished I'll be good and ready for NWN.

I agree with "JDR13" take a break from CRPG's. I had the same feeling a few years back after playing Torment and BG2. They just filled my head with sickness toward CRPG's. I startet playing CIVIII, HoMM, Serios Sam. And at some point (A few month later) you will get your desire back to play CRPG's. I did!

Try Gothic, if you didn't ! Interesting story, generally you don't save the world and npcs actually has some personality (not too much, but more than their fellows in morrowind).

I agree with Gomez. Online CRPGs can get boring if you don't know who you're playing with. Games like Diablo 2 are less about teamplay and more about building a character who can handle the extra difficulty to reap the extra experience and higher level items.

POsting your name here isn't a bad idea. I'm sure a few people will be playing... and seeing someone you 'know' is always a good feeling.

I also agree with taking a time out from CRPGs. I have Jedi Knight 2 installed (normally I hate FPS, but hey... it's STAR WARS so I can make an exception.) and I like to play it for an hour or so (or until it crashes during a loading game screen and I have to reboot). Strategy games are another great 'break'... especially ones with RPG elements to them. Like Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns. It's real time, but it's manageable as you can speed up or slow down the time at will. I love that game. Or Masters of Orion 2... my friends and I still kill an hour or more on that game while waiting for the rest of the gaming group to show up .

I think that was the charm of Fallout. You weren't out to save the world. All you wanted was the damn waterchip. But all these supermutants and such kept trying to stop you. You were played like a pawn... and at the end, after all your heroics of saving the world... your own kind turns their backs on you. What an anti-hero! The very act of saving the world made you an outcast. How's that for a save the world story?

But seriously, if you want some cute shoot-em-up kindda game, check this out: DarkSpace.

JK II: JO has to be one of the best Star Wars games that I've played. I am in agreeance with you, Lord EX. The only possible thing that could make it better would be an integrated multiplayer, like Tribes II. Which makes me ask a question...

Are online games going to lack official public servers in the future? In JK II, there can only be 100 games at a time on M$'s Zone, many of which are being locked and passworded. If the community is large enough that there could be always be a couple dozen of each type of game open, on stable connections, there is no need for official dedicated servers, but that is usually not the case, and people must play on the unreliable server of the end user. Am I the only one who finds this odd? Also, who wants to look at Casino adds while they play a Star Wars game? Just my thoughts on how to kill multiplayer of a very good game.

seems to me you have 2 choises:
A: take a break from CRPG's (I just play CRPGs and other games simultaneously, it works and you never get tired cuz they are both different)
B: GET SOME FRIENDS! after a while, i HATED baldur's gate, but me ad 2 of my friends got together, created this whole elaborate story thing, and are playing in the Baldur's Gate.. (We are gonna move it to NWN soon) its great! if you have friends, especially ones that roleplay in a roleplaying game, well.. your experiance will be 1000x better.

by the way there are RPGs where your task is not "save the world" or save sb./sth. from evil

well but it is rare....
Fallout and Realms of Arkania come to mind

Well.....
in Realms of Arkania you had to save the world! (at least in some way)
In the first two parts of the trilogy you "only" had to save small regions of the world and again in the third part but there you learnt that you finally had saved the whole world.
One of the best CRPGs though

If you can bare bad graphics (well, I mean they are bad today, state of the art for its time ) try Ultima 4 if you are tired of saving the world. Your goal in U4 is to study the virtues and live by them to ultimately become the Avatar. No world-saving allowed here

Saving the World and fighting Crime and/or Evil

I agree totally. I hate games where the only reason you are playing is to eventually fight the Super Villian who greatly out matches you in everything (power, strength, armor, spells, etc.). I recently bought Morrowind and have been playing it quite a bit. I have yet to complete one of the main story line quests and probably won't. I have been traveling around hacking and slashing my way through dungeons and fighting misc. monsters. I could care less if the "Bad Guy" wins or even gets stopped. In one place I accidently killed a NPC and a thing flashed that said that since he was dead the Game was Over and gave me the option to reload or keep playing. I kept playing. I am still running around hacking and slashing.
I tried a couple of online games like Evercrack but hate to pay to play plus since I didn't know anyone else playing I was pretty much on my own. My character didn't last to long wandering around by himself. I have pretty much deceided to go back to Live RPG games at my local Game Store until someone come out with a game that lets you travel around the "world" hacking and slashing and if there is an "ending" it is to get and keep a stronghold and protect it from enemies and keep it running ...while I go out and hack and slash some more.

Isn't this the classic "universal myth" a la Joseph Campbell? The warrior leaves the tribe, endures hardships, gets special powers, and defeats the tribe's enemies and leads them to salvation.

It's also the theme of 99.9% of action movies.

Sounds like what you want is more of the diversity of literature and movies in a CRPG setting. That's been an alleged goal of many developers since the days of Infocom and "interactive fiction", but it hasn't gotten that far.

One game I played a while ago that had a very gripping, dramatic storyline was a Japanese "dating simulation". Shame that genre will never catch on in the west. It was very much like reading a novel (a rather melodramatic novel, admittedly)
