Resolutions for the Gaming New Year @ GamerDad |
|
GamerDad writer and RPGDot contributor Mike Anderson has written an article titled Resolutions for the Gaming Year at GamerDad, broken down into principles named after individual games. I can't say I agree with all of them but here's one that I like:
The Dungeon Lords Principle - Time is valuable – too valuable to continue spending considerable amounts of it on two different sets of discussion forums daily, pondering the possibilities of a game that has been multiply delayed, seen little released information, and whose future seems bleaker with each passing day. They finally released a demo – but even that was done ineptly and with poor communication. That is one of the great things about demos – they can provide an insight into how a game works that screenshots and trailers never will. The demo had loads of problems, which brings us back to the Restricted Area Principle.
|

Of course, that leaves me wondering what you didn't agree with ... while I think that the choice of games is always up for debate - many didn't hate Deus Ex Invisible War like I did - the basis of taking so much on faith when there is $50 of your own money at stake ... just a bad decision.

I should have spelled that one out more - I really was geared up for XIII, and tracked it for months before it came out. I enjoyed it, but after it was done, I just never replayed it ... and at the time I was dual-platforming much more heavily (there is no longer Mac-PC parity in gaming laptops, unfortunately), so I was buying most things for Mac & PC. But as I tracked the eBay listings for XIII for Mac, it was pretty high, and I nearly bought it a few times despite the fact that I *still* haven't played it a full 2nd time on the PC. I've finally cured myself of that.
But it is a principle I still apply - for instance, Ultima V Lazarus just came out, and I still have Dungeon Siege for the Mac, so I installed it there. No prob, right? Right - except that I was enjoying it enough that I thought 'maybe I should pick up a copy of DS for PC again' ... and remind myself NO!

Such is the life of the cRPG gamer, I suppose ... always looking for the diamond, often ending up with the rough ...
