in the superb FAQ its mentioned that quickslots 4-0 can be used for any item, yet I have tried hundreds of different combinations to no avail.
the faq lists quickslot locations like this:
1: melee weapons
2: ranged weapons
3: spells
4-0: any item
I tried doing an extensive search in these forums as well with no luck 
Does anyone have ANY idea how to set items to slots 4-0?

I thought only spell scrolls and runes could be assigned to quickslots beyond number 4... |

yes, slots 4-0 are for scrolls and runes
