I am a member of the Old Camp and I am at the point of accepting either a position as a guard or going with the Fire Mages. I would really like to go Water Mage as I had read they were the more powerful wielders of magic; is this true and is it possible? If it is possible, what should I avoid wasting skill points on? I have seventy at this point to allocate. Thanks in advance for your responses.

If you want to become a Water Mage and then a necromancer, go for the firemage now. If you want to become 'just' a watermage later on, you can become a guard now instead, it doesn't matter that much. But circles of magic become increasingly expensive, so if you want to be a mage, pick the firemage now.

I joined the Fire Mages and the Guards but I am uncertain about the rings of magic. Are these rings applicable for the other two camps of magic? I would hate to waste the seventy skill points I have saved up buying Fire Mage magic when I really want to be a Water Mage. Thanks in advance for your responses.

The circles are the same. If you buy fourth circle as a fire mage, you'll also be in the 4th circle if you become a water mage soon after.

Circles just describe you level in magic mastery, i.e. the level needed to equip runes.

If you're 4th circle, you can equip level 4 runes of every kind, be they fire, water, necromantic or whatever.

Alrighty then, now I have a reasonable understanding of the magic system in Gothic. I have been trying to save skill points as much as possible and did not want to purchase circles of magic for each magical discipline if it was not required to do so. How can you tell what magic spells are reuseable and which are one time cast spells? I have a bunch of collected scrolls and have yet to try any of them out.

Scrolls are one-shot only, runes last as long as you possess them.

Runes won't disappear when you run out of mana. You just have to wait until your mana is up again. A scroll won't work, either, if you don't have enough mana to cast its spell.

=Edit= Thanks, Fasttrak... I agree, the boards are good .
