class and race choices
   

I am researching party make up before I actually start playing. I have played Wiz 6 but that was a while ago. I like to veer from standard fare for the most part but have a few race choices I would like opinions on.

I think my class choices will be as follows
Monk(felpurr/mook),Samurai(felpurr),Lord(dwarf),Bard(hobbit/elf),Alchemist(hobbit/mook/elf),Gadgeteer(female gnome)

For race I have noted those I have made choices for but I am undecided where to use the mook. I would like to have 6 different races but haven't made a decision on the monk,bard and alchemist.

Ideas??

This is really playable party. However not really strong "go quickly trought" party. But I do not think there is reason to make strongest possible party. And you seems to be experienced RPG player, so I think you will really enjoy it.

I'd say use the mook for your monk, the hobbit for your bard, and the elf for your alchemist. Just my 2 cents.

Mooks are excellent Rangers (bonus on searching).

In my 2 parties, for the classes you're contemplating I used:
Mook monk
Faerie bard (playable, but not ideal. remnant from Wiz7, as bards no longer cast mage spells)
Dracon samurai
Rawulf lord
Hobbit gadgeteer
[Never used an alchemist]

It's a lot of personal choice. Have you tried a faerie ninja? (I haven't, but I hear they kick butt.)

I'd take a Bishop before an Alchemist. They can get Alc skill up and running just as fast as an Alc, just no bonus. But they make up by having all four shcools, with all the spellbooks available your mana pool is tripled.
Otherwise that's much like one of my parties that finished.

Let's see. Agree with the bishop/alchemist thing above if (and only if) you have at least a little RPG experience and are willing to mix lots and lots of potions for skill practice.

I've played a hobbit bard. The biggest drawback is that they don't get much stamina. I don't know the exact numbers, but (as an example) a human with 45 vitality gets 110 stamina points while a hobbit with 45 vitality only ends up with 95. It takes a lot of stamina to toot your horn...

Last, I personally would avoid the mook monk. The molasses-like starting speed for a mook would be very painful for the monk class.

On the other hand, it's been said over and over that there isn't a single party that can't be successful in Wiz8. Some are just a liitle more challenging.

Of course you're willing to mix lots and lots of potions--you get lots and lots of Gold doing it, which you need for all those lovely Spellbooks, and Amulets, and Cloaks, and....

In fact, once you hit 50 in ALC and start mixing the big ones, your ALC goes up so fast, as does your GP. You can get one char up to 100 and half a million bux in a couple of weeks. (you have to wait until the merchants restock). If you're a practise monkey, you can have a Ninja, Ranger, or Alchemist get to 100 by casting Knock Knock on the vault door, and your Bishop can mix potions for the 100, using Knock Knock to build Wizardry first. Or, if your Alc gets ahead of Wiz, make the Bishop a Mage for a level and cast K-K for Wiz. Get some Mana Stones first, cast, use stones, repeat, go back to recharge the stones, etc. This takes very little game time, and lots of 'real' time. Plus you're likely to have encounters upon taking the teleporter back out.
