In this case, Gothic is taken from the ancient Gaelic dialect. It seems that a mythological philanthropic man by the name of Gothe was captured and falsely sent to prison, where he was befriended by a slow commoner by the name of Dum. With his help, Gothe escaped the prison and was again a free man. After the escape, Gothe roamed the country side, righting wrong and slaying huge beasts with his mighty sword. The followers of this person were called Gothen later to be called Gothic, hence the title Gothic. Gothe, it appears, was almost invincible and always carried his infamous Ehtog's Sword with him everywhere he went. He was a mighty hero. This is all true, and if it isn't, it should be

Gaelic as in the Celtic Highlanders of Scotland. Surely you have read about Scotland's revolutionary William Wallace who led the revolt against England's Edward the first in the thirteenth century. Throw some kilts on the characters in the game and there you go. Gothe was a similiar character. This is all true, and it's not, it should be. |

Well, that clears up the whole name thing. I always thought it was named Gothic because of it's dark, gloomy nature, but what you say Max Killen is very true, and if it isn't, it should be. _________________ = Member of The Nonflamers' Guild =

Yes thats true. The gloominess and darkness are certainly associated terms when discussing things that are Gothic. The original word, I believe, relates to the Goths who invaded Europe around the time of the fall of the Roman Empire, circa 450 A.D. A name applied to loosely associated bands of Germanic tribes who overran large parts of the Empire and established themselves in many areas. Also the Visigoths, as in Visigothic, the mod, which is an extention of the game. Gothic architecture came much later but has its roots in Germanic culture. Being that the game comes from Germany and is both dark and foreboding, I think the name fits rather well. |
