I just got Gothic today and was real excited about playing it and It installed and everything and put the icon on my desktop, but everytime I double click it nothing happens. It shows the little thinking icon by my mouse pointer like its trying to load but then it just stops and nothing happens. Whats the problem? I read other people on this forum using XP say that it runs great with Gothic so why isn't mine? I have a AMD Duro 800 mhz with 256mb RAM and a GeForce2 card.

I also have Windows XP, and it seems to work just fine (although, with the usual freezes). If I were you, I would uninstall, then reinstall. When you reinstall it, don't customize anything. Just say yes to everything they ask (except when they ask if you want to save the pictures as something...I just chose "take no action").

*sigh* I looked around on both the hosted sites. Nothing helped me. I downloaded the FAQ and skimmed through it. I ordered this game online so it looks like a waste of money if i cant play it. man this game is awsome i wish i could play it so bad.

Did you download the patch from GothicDot?
What soundcard do you have? Which driver version do you use for your GeForce 2? Is DirectX8 installed? How big is your swap file?

How long did you wait for Gothic to start? Close _every_ other program running in the background, especially overclocking tools, MS Office indexing and virus scanners.

You can change some settings in the gothic.ini (make a backup copy first). You could try to disable the intro videos, disable sound, etc., to find out what device causes the problems.

Yes I downloaded the patch off the site, I downloaded the newest drivers for my GF2 tonight, and I don't know what soundcard I have. But what do those things have to do with the program not starting up? I just dont understand it. I let it sit for a long time after trying to run the program but nothing. :| I appreciate your help though but I just dont have any more ideas.

Sometimes program A wonīt run if program B still uses some required ressources. Thatīs why I asked you to close everything. For example an overclocking tool developed by Asus and Gothic.

Do you have the opportunity to test it on another pc? Maybe the CD is defective.

Your system sounds so neutral, Gothic *should* run without problems.

Do you still have an older windows version, to install a second OS (as dualboot)?

edit:You should run DxDiag. It will tell you which soundcard you have and test all the DirectX stuff.

Your system is fairly minimal for Gothic, but it SHOULD still run - if not well. You said it started and then nothing - but you didn't say how you got out of it or if it just dumped totally back to desktop. For instance, if you ctrl-alt-del does it show anything running at all or is it locked so badly you have to reboot? How much drive space you you have free?

Well the other pc wouldnt run it im afraid. I had ME before XP but it was pre-loaded. As far as I can tell all programs are closed when i run it.

I have over 5gigs of space left on my hard drive. And it never leaves my desktop. When I double click the icon nothing happens, it shows a little hour glass like the computer is htinking but then nothing. when I ctrl alt delete it doesnt show anything.

DXDiag.exe is the diagnosis program shipped with DirectX. It will tell you what hardware you have and if all the DirectX drivers for graphics and sound card are functional.

Under Win98 itīs located in c:windowssystem
