Suddenly I can't adjust the shadows.....why?

I'm playing with a Hercules 3D FDX Radeon 8500 LE and until now have had a slider under in-game options to enable me to adjust the shadows. Now I find the slider has gone, and half a warning message is visible along the lines of "the resolution doesn't allow" and that's all it says before the warning message hits the end of the window. Changing resolution doesn't do anything.

Anyone got any ideas on this please?

I'm also still getting the ground flashing white and disappearing to be replaced with water and rocks then reappearing again when I wander around outside cities. Any ideas on that one as well please?
