Is this a tech problem or bug?

Every time I double-click on the rope, I have two ropes btw and neither work, my game screen freezes and my pointer gets 'detached' from the hand. The pointer is the only thing I can move and my game never comes back. I have to restart my computer every time.

I dowloaded the patch available now, latest verion?, and installed it.

Can anyone advise me?

TIA ~T

Update:

I looked at all the FAQ and suggestions. I found one topic similar to mine. Nothing has worked. I deleted the game entirely and reinstalled it. AGAIN. I checked my drivers and updated them. (I had to UPgrade because I don't know how to 'uninstall' my newer drivers to reinstall the older version. New=40.0 or 41.1 versions are bad but 39.0 versions are good or something like that. Anyway, I couldn't get it to work.

I really need some help if anyone has any suggestions. I emailed that person suggested in another topic as well. I'm ready to shelf this game. Please help me.

TIA ~T

Sorry...I didn't really have any problems. I assume you're using at least v1.15?

1.16a, trust me everything is up to date.

The only thing I couldn't do was downgrade the driver. I didn't understand the instructions.

I had many technical problems with arx fatalis also.

The one that confused me the most was that I had to delete all of my save game files to get the game running.

Even my new games were screwed up by my old corrupt save game file. How I dont know.

So if youre at the end of your rope try that, back up the save folder and delete all the files and try to start over and get to the rope and experiment( I believe a rope is fairly early in the game or I wouldnt suggest this)

Then one at a time put your old save games back into the save folder to see what is up.
I believe save games become corrupt from patching in this game. The newest patch is the only one that claims to deal with this problem, and I never played with 1.16 so cant comment on it.

Just want to also add, sound is something that can also cause the problem.

Does the game crash when you place the rope on the wheel?

That is the setting off of a new sound effect.
Alter your settings in sounds to software mode. If its already there try hardware mode. Many games need messing with this setting.

Have you noticed sound stuttering at all? That is another frequent problem that needs niggling with.

Yes, the sound never finishes in cut scenes. I always have to read the end of the scene at the bottom of the page.

Hmmmm, sound effects are ok, I think, but truthfully they may be iffy. I don't think I pay enough attention to them.

As far as the rope I can't do anything after the double click. It doesn't even come out of my inventory nor does the icon change as it should it freezes immediately after the double-click.

I'm going to try to start completely over again. (I've done this twice already but once was after the initial rope issue and I started a new game then I tried with the save game file. Once more for the road, I suppose.

Thanks for the suggestions. Other than the rope I have had several small technical problems as well, like the sound cutting out, but I've dealt with it. Nothing that drastically inhibited gameplay just was a nuisance.

A new day = A new set of patience! LOL!

Any and all suggestions will help! Thank you!

[update] I removed everything from my system. I reinstalled the game from my cdrom. The cdrom version is 1.13. I did not reinstall the patch.

So far I am running ok. Rope is not an issue anymore. The only problems are the ones I had initially: Sound cutting out at end of a conversation during the cut scenes. This I can live with. (Unless, of course, anyone knows how to fix it?)

Curious though, without the patch there is no top to go with the bottoms of the clothes he finds/wears. Surely I didn't miss this? LOL. Not too big O' deal really. Just an observation.

*keeps fingers crossed*

Okies, back to some gameplay on my day off!

I'm not trying to prove anyone wrong. I'm trying to get help for my game issues. But, incidentally, my sys specs are about as up to date as you can get. I updated a lot of memory, graphics card, etc. with the sole purpose of Gothic II in mind. I have more than enough, but thanks for checking. You never know unless you ask.

I'd send this to Garret using the first thread of this forum. These are problems that should be fixed for good, and hopefully not continued in the next version of the game.

I did send the rope issue but not the sound issue. I will send him an email as soon as I can.

Thanks! ~T
