Even probably during playing period one or two co-players got something coming up and have to stop playing, or your girlfriend/boyfriend/wife start whining because you ignore them .
That applies to both single and multiplayers games. Even though I've never tried MMORPGs, I've had many immersive CRPG experiences tainted by the curse of the bored wife. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

Well, the major inconvenience to MMOGs when THAT happens (girlfriend/boyfriend RL issue) is that you can't pause it. The world goes on even if you're not paying attention. If a mob passes by in the vascinity and attacks you, it will kill you regardless if you'Re AFK or not.
A single player CRPG often times can be paused or quickly saved and shut down while you go do your real life things _________________ =Proud Father of a new gamer GIRL!=

What I meant by saying that you sholdn't compare them is that they are not mutually exclusive. They do not compete for the same people. Just because they are both called RPGs does not mean that they really are. None of these games are really strict RPGs. And how they differ is very varied. Different strokes for different folks, right?
Personally, I play both. Or at least did at some point in time. They both had something different to offer. Excluding one for the other is silly, IMHO. That's like saying if you eat apples you can't eat pears. Some people may not like pears, which is fine, but those who eat apples should not automatically be considered as pear haters. _________________ (@) |

Personally, I prefer MUDs over MMOGs. MUDs force me to use my imagination which is quite enjoyable with the well written scripts. I still like SP CRPGs the best though, but my question is this... Where does all the money spent on monthly fees go? Say a MMOG or MUD charges $10 a month..and they have over 2 million registered users....that's 20 million dollars a month. Now, does it really cost that much money to keep the wizard/server running or is it just a pocketed profit?
EDIT: By the way, I also agree that SPRPGs and MMOGs/MUDs are two different genres, they satisfy and appeal to others in different ways. _________________ = Member of The Nonflamers' Guild =

I'm pretty sure at least half of it is pocket profit, but it does cost alot of money to keep it running, plus it is a job, so i'm pretty sure it is distributed evenly. _________________ Nothing is impossible... for me!!

Still, I think it's funny that they're making a killing off something they have no direct control over - the gaming society. Take away the gaming society and you just have [in most cases] a poorly made SP game that is constantly evolving. _________________ = Member of The Nonflamers' Guild =

I find most of the GOOD RPG's very addictive. Wiz8 springs to mind. Online gaming is fine, fun and quite different from the Sp experience where YOU are the sole arbiter of your fate. I also object to paying $20 a month (Australian currency is about 53 cents US to the $ ). Heck, I'm still playing SP Morrowind and NWN and soon hope to have Arx and DIvinity. Who has time for online games?? _________________ If God said it, then that settles it!

I agree, I beat Gothic and Fallout not to long ago, and I'm still playing Fallout 2, Morrowind, NWN, and Arcanum. By the time I finish those, if I finsh those - IWD2, Lionheart, Arx, and Gothic 2 will arrive. I too, don't have time for online games. _________________ = Member of The Nonflamers' Guild =

I've tended to stay away from MMORPG because the people I know who play them (mostly Evercrack) seem more driven by the acquisition of items and power than anything else. Yes it's an anecdotal example, and I know that some people care about role-playing, but they seem to be few and far between. Take away role-playing, and you have Diablo, with a bit more complicated skills system.
With single player, you can burn out a game in a month, that's true, but I usually tend to come back to the good ones a bit later and replay them. And sometimes, I like to take my time, and finish the game over a span of multiple months. It adds up to a lot more value, and the quality so far is far superior to MMORPG (judging solely on my over-the-shoulder view, of course )
