wrong party, weak tactics or just too much of a newbie?

Hi there!

I startet Wiz8 a few months ago and now I finally have the time to play a little further... I'm currently on my way to Trynton after finishing the monastery and Arnika (spelled correctly?). My party is dracon fighter, human valkyrie, mook ranger, hobbit rogue, dwarv priest and elf mage. I took Myles and the valkyrie from Arnika along.

Although I'm playing on novice level, fights are pretty tough... Usually I'm running into the arms of roaming monsters and after the fight it's time for the next rest (casters used up most of the spells, people severely wounded etc.). Is this normal? On novice level??? I'll need weeks to get to Trynton! The monastery was a piece of cake compared to this...
I think I understood the basics of formations (like using polearms in certain positions). Or is it the party?

Give me a hint if you can, thanks!

PS. Do you need a Gadgeteer? Are they VERY useful?
PPS. What a great game! I don't need Morrowind! I want storyline and atmosphere!

Hello Zork,

1) read hints (no spoiler, so you do not need to be afraid of...) - first topic here, there is link in it, we comipled it here before some time, they are really useful I think

2) you have good party, nearly same as I had, so there is no problem... just follow hints and you will be alright

Thanks

Thank you Danicek!
Good to know I'll be allright with my party. I'd hate to find out after 3/4 of the game, that I made wrong choices in the beginning. I'll check out the hints.

Bye,
Zzorrkk

Party looks very workable to me. There will an NPC gadgeteer at one point, if you want one, but no class is essential. Sounds to me like you may need to read up about fighting tactics. Definitely follow Danicek's advice and read the hints thread.

if you are wounded after a fight on the road: don't sleep -> heal yourself with your spellcasters and potions.
if you have to rest on the road, sleep not in the middle of the road -> search for a safe hideout.

HiddenX is correct

Try not to rest, as more monsters will spawn. Also, stay off the main roads. Walk along the edge of the mountains, so your party doesn't get surrounded.
