Weapon damage in Gothic

I've always been wondering how damage is dealt to an enemy when using a sword or axe. I think this is how it goes but i may be wrong:

Say you have 70 strength:
If you use a Custodian's blade, they required strength is 44. That leaves you with 26 extra strength. Is the damage done to an enemy simply the 71 done by the sword or is it the 71sword damage plus 26 extra strength for a total of 97 damage?

If this were the case then there really is no reson for having a weapon with higher damage because it would require more strength. For example
Using 70 strength again:

Weapon(Damage) Req. Strength Extra Strength Total Damage
Blood Blade (85) 62 8 93
Rage Steel (8 66 4 92
Smash (80) 56 14 94
Rusty 2h (61) 30 40 101

Other weapons will be similar to this- according to what i see then the Rusty 2h will do the most damge out of any weapon (besides Uritziel) for a person with 70 strength. Please correct me if im wrong.

No, Total Strength + Weapon Damage = Total Damage

Total Strength + Weapon Damage - Armor = Total Damage, Sauron!

Urizial is the only weapon in the game that doesn't use that damage model.

I was um... talking about... hitting an unarmoured enemy.
