Vanishing Soul Gems

I had 6 grand soul gems and 4 greater soul gems vanish from my inventory. Can NPCs steal from you? Is there a limit to how many items you can carry at one time?

Thx

I talked to a guard about an assassination i did for the Tong in Vivec, but i had a writ for that and the guard said everything was in order. Other than that, i havent had any bounties out on me.

Don't feel bad. The same thing happen to me and i had to start from another saved game because i really needed those gems. I wonder why they just disappeared. Do guards really just take your items, even if you pay the money?

If you are caught in a crime and get out of it any way other than resisting arrest, the guards will take all the stolen items from your inventory. The problem is, they cannot differentiate between stolen items of a certain type and the legaly obtained kind. So, to be on the safe side, they take all of them. Merchants are the same. If you ever steal something from them, they will scream crime every single time you try and give them any item of the same type. Regardless of whether it is the actual stolen one or not.
