Dungeon Siege 2: Review @ NLG
   

Next Level Gaming's Daniel Comer wasn't very impressed with Dungeon Siege II, as indicative of his rather unremarkable <a href="http://www.nlgaming.com/pc/nl/asp/id_1207/pc/nl/reviewDisp.htm" target="_blank">review</a> in which he doesn't really give an overall scoring - nevertheless his rating system does add up to a miserly 5.6 out of 10 overall... <br> <br><blockquote><em>Was I the only one that got bored with Dungeon Siege when it first came out? Well of all my friends I was the only one who seemed to have a problem with the combat. I found that your character was insignificant in combat and the game got rather boring because of that fact. When you did engage it often boiled down to a button mashing fest that changed little during the course of the game. Now don’t get me wrong, I thought the game had some great features, but that was it, just a bunch of features strong together, with no real game to connect them all. I was so disappointed they fell short of making something great with their tools, so I was very excited to get my hands on Dungeon Siege II and see if they had finally put a game together with their cool ideas and game engine. <br> <br> </em></blockquote>

Strangely enough, the author expressed excitement in his PREVIEW. And yet his review is so negative....

I must strenuosly disagree with this dude, though. I would rate the game 8.5/10 based on the demo alone

For what it is worth - I would have to concur with you on all points:-)

Can hardly wait for the game's release here in North America next week!!

It seems pretty clear that feelings of DS II will likely mirror DS I. If you lovedthe first you will love this one, if not ...

Some of the stuff he said was similar to my demo experience - I was a spellcaster and found that I had to use melee way too often because of getting swarmed because my 'front line' was useless. Or I ran away ... or died.

I also found DS I to get boring ... I definitely felt you could often enter a large battle area, get some coffee and press the 'mana' and 'health' buttons every now and then while checking voice mail or whatever.

But, it seems like they *have* done a bunch to give people personalities, and improve the skills.

And actually get the game *done* ... so we're not talking about another Dungeon Lords ... or Restricted Area ... or Boiling Point ... or even Metalheart (as far as I can tell so far) ...

In my opinion whoever thinks Dungeon Siege 1 rocks and Dungeon Siege 2 sucks is lame. It's annoying how people prefer click and wait rather than click and actually strategize >_< (Some will say otherwise).

Myself, I would give Dungeon Siege 2 a very close 9.5, the 0.5 points are deducted from this because the Engine, even though the graphics have been changed, they have not been changed too much, but enough, yet my computer barely runs the game, this is the only fault of the game. Everything else is just pure good, why? Because of the combat system, it makes you be much more alive and active in combat, and even though dungeon siege 1 had a realistic potion system, it was still very painful to wait so long just to drink a potion.... While you drink a potion you DIE instead of being healed, because you cant do anything else while drinking, in Dungeon Siege 2, even though healing is slow (Though some other potions may heal much faster) it does not require you to do a special animation.

Seriously, Whoever thinks Dungeon Siege 2 sucks, is on drugs...

And lets not forget about how much Dungeon Siege 2 is so much less linear than Dungeon Siege 1, you dont have to do quests in any order or do any quests at all if you dont like to with just a few exceptions...

I feel CRPG is getting less strategic probably because it has to deal with lot of elements. Especially graphic demand is choking other element such as strategy. I played some games from other genres including demo and found quite many of them have much more strategic nature than recent CRPG. Among them, I think Total War: Rome and Silent Hunter III are quite sophisticated. So, if you like strategic essence, play good strategy games and expect other things from CRPG.

I played Dungeon Siege II demo and it is a nice work if not my cup of tea. I don’t buy any DS series but as least I found some improvements from DS I demos.

First, you cannot that cheap retreat and attack “cheats” any more. Hostiles are more persistent. Special ability development seems to be more player-friendly than AD&D feats progressions. Also, as XVampireX said, mana and health portions are improved. If you have a high level ranger and/or a natural magic user, you will have quite many of quick fixing portions. It seems if your level is higher you can make better portions from the resource points. If you only have a melee fighter and/or a combat magic user, it would be problematic because they don’t have fixing method. Especially mana is quite essential for spell casters. As for the point txa1265 pointed out, I played as a natural magic user and a combat magic user respectively, and I needed spend some time for “resting” with the latter character, which made the game quite slow and boring at times.

In any case, as I said, I now play strategy games and I spend no more time on DS. It is a nice game for what it is intended.

It seems to have a good story behind this one but its ultimately too fast. It doesn't give you enough time to really enjoy it. That's from the demo anyway. I likely won't buy this game. I'm still waiting for U5 Lazarus.

I wonder if it has a good story but I think DS is a fast-paced hack & slash, for which, IMO, a similarly paced-story development would fit. For this reason, I didn't buy DS even for the Ultima remake. I just cant imagine both of them can be fitted together. If it manages to be proven good, I'd say "congrats", though.
