And btw, New Camp suck bigtime for Mages... In New Camp you cannot start magic training until Chapter 5 or so...
Old Camp is the correct path of Magic. In Old Camp you start to learn Magic already in Chapter 3, and can reach Circle 6.
Remember that you barely need to spend skillpoints in the first chapter. You can earn lots and lots of experience by only do all the quests in the three camps.
You can also buy rings, and use bows to take out nearly every type of creature you find in the wilderness, without spending a single skillpoint.
You might have to put a little points in something when reaching the end of Chapter 3, but there are only two major missions in Chapter 3 what in my opinion are rather easy with Bow & rings only.
If you saved enough skillpoints when reaching the beginning of Chapter 3 (or rather, end of Chapter 2 to be honest), you can instantly become a great mage, wich can later be updated to become even more powerful.
To be exact, save up to 80-90 skillpoints to that point. That way you can start with Circle 4 and +10/20 mana.
That is enough to beat the entire Chapter 3 in wich you should save at least 30 skillpoints to, and if you get points left, save an additional 40 (30+40=70) before you spend skillpoints in anything else (and keep the saved skillpoints for Circle 5/6).
Now... This is powergaming I know...
Its up to you if you want to do that.
My best tip thou, dont try to become a warrior after starting a career in Magic. A masterized Mage is alot more powerful than a masterized Warrior.
I can say that after comparing a Circle 6 Mage with a 210 Strength Warrior.
A second tip, use Mana bonus rings/necklaces in the beginning (while saving skillpoints). At one step, you can change your Mana rings to the best protection jewelry you find.
They are good for two things:
a) Staying alive (I had 135 Armor in the end...) (Warriors do better with strength bonuses, and can reach about 100 Armor)
b) 'deflect' blows so attacks doesnt interrupt your concentration (needed to throw many spells).
