RPGDot Feature: Ekim's Gamer View: Staying With the Game

As every week, Ekim provides us with an excellent editorial concerning mmorpg's. This time he talks about what keeps players with mmorpg's, and why we need to spend so much time playing them.

Good editorial. I liked it very much.

Sometimes i wonder IF there are companies in the world that "actually" listen and interview players what THEY want from a MMORPG.

All i see right now is that companies go for the quick and dirty cash.....
But they forget how to keep players interested in MMORPG's..Money makes the world turn....but money keeps coming in when players are happy.....The again, there is no no perfect MMORPG. As the market will grow, players will find their own niche and stay there.

Anyway, nice editorial Ekim

Gravel.

I wonder if we really will though... As of right now we can'T say that gamers found their niche, but that the niche rather found them. Most MMORPGs are alike, because of the market being as it is publishers will always push developpers to make games that are like the other successful ones (make it more like EQ), and gamers are probably stuck in the middle. Sure they enjoy that type of game, but is it really their niche? And I don't see things changing any time soon.

The "niche" may change, but I don't think we'll be given more choice, more options to find our own. We'll always be faced with a little bogus option.

I don't know Ekim. Right now, as you descripe it and as it is, the market is free for the games companies and the publishers. We all know that you should never change a winning team right ? But the doing the same trick over and over again doesn't work anymore at a certain point. If the market gets flooded with MMORPG's (and it looks like it will, bc online gaming is making easy money), it doesn't mean that every "EQ" clone will bring in cash.

With a "niche" market i mean that games companies will try to identify areas of gamers who are willing to pay and stay, instead of playing an "EQ" clone. Inovation and revelation will be the word then. Some gamers like traditional RPG, others want it to be a FPS online, while others want hack and slash and a level thred mill. Thats where the niche will be created.
Maybe it will never happen, but i hope it will.

Don't forget Ekim, WE, the people who play, have the power AKA the money the companies flood on.
