MMORPGDot Feature: Monday Mutterings: Some Storytelling |
|

We continue our editorial series of Monday Mutterings this week with a little piece of mine about having storylines in MMORPG's. Here's a snip:

Is an mmorpg supposed to have any end-game at all, or to provide any motivation for the player to act? In a single-player rpg, it usually is the story that provides the motivation to do something and progress in the game. The leveling happens along the way, as a result of progressing in the storyline or in order to do so. In an mmorpg however, the increase of your level has become the goal itself, in most cases.

And the article is over here.
|

Thats exactly why im only interested in MMOs that have freedom. The game with the most freedom i know about are Trials of Ascension (if its not vaporware), Darkfall Online, and maybe Dragon Empires. The rest arent really free. Darkfall especially is the most freeform game i have ever heard about. Not even Morrowind has as much potential as Darkfall.
That goes to show that im not playing any MMOs right now either. I think my MMO standards have risen far beyond practicality. Im hoping for the kind of online games they will have in 2010. But im stuck in 2003. grrrr. Maybe Darkfall will change that for me. I hope so. I really hope Darkfall works, because if it doesnt, then i really doubt that i will have much of an MMO future for myself. I dont really want to play another Asherons Call or buy into expectations of another failed SWG. Ive had enough of vain empty promises. I want my damn game to happen already! |

Hmm, I understand your stance, but I don't think we're going to get the "ultimate" mmorpg experience handed on a plate just now. If we want to enjoy an mmorpg, I think we'll have to work for it ourselves as well... which means role-playing to me. Role-playing is a way for me of working through the boring parts of mmorpg's and attempting to make the world more lively and interesting. Lots of freedom is nice, but unless there's a good deal of role-players and role-play motivations in the game; I suspect that those games might turn out to be fairly empty (they're not instant action). _________________ Vault Network Editor |

Many who play these games are into the "roleplaying" aspects that pen-and-paper fans admire because they used to be pnp players too. But many others of them treat the avatar merely as an extension of themselves and act accordingly. Maybe the real roleplaying will happen when the players get caught up into a meta-game, such as real political maneuvers, ect. What Darkfall has going for it is real land ownership, now that could change things. When people have familiar places and people that feel like home, and they join up in comradarie to defend their homes from enemies, thats kinda FUN i think, as long as we dont have to constantly hunt in order to support our buildings maintenance like in shadowbane, thats just stupid design.
And this genre is slow to innovate, so we wont get the "ultimate" experience any time soon, although there is nothing wrong with having hopes. I take back my previous stance, in that i most likely will never leave this genre, as well as all the other single-player and MPer genres. However, i am very selective when it comes to online play. Too selective, i think. But the bright side is that the games i have been waiting for will soon be out, and i wont have to hang around various MMO message boards anymore to get my MMO social fix. |
