i wanna play gothic but i need to get a new video card for this game, i was leaning towards either a geforce 2 ti 32mb ddr($80) or a geforce 2 mx 400 64mb($65). what would be better? and if you guys could tell me what you all have, that would be very helpful... thanks. |

Depends on what you can afford.
If you get a Geforce 3 it works fine, but dont start thinking you can just run everything on high resolution.
Trry to get the best out of opengl. Direct3d sucks.

every program for me Works "great" in d3d "geforce 3 Ti 200" w/23.11 drivers
only problem is that i cannot play some old games then again, ( why would i want to anyways )
if you can afford it , why would you settle for anything less ( GeForce 3 Ti ) |

The decision is a no brainer. Take the GeForce 2 Ti. The MX is seriously bandwidth limited.
If you can get the card with 64MB + TV-out for 10-15$ more you should buy this version. |

Yep,Gorath's right,no choice really between those two.
Bandwidth limited simply means it can't send and recieve data at a fast enough pace to give the core enough to work with.
If you connect a garden hose to an oil tanker it won't matter how powerful pump,the hose will limit the flow.
Easiest way to see that limitation is on high res and 32-bit...if you check a review you'll see that the MX will lose more speed the higher the res becomes as compared to a GF2.
The MX doesn't really have a need for 64 Meg due to its bandwidth limitation...
DDR sends two times per cycle whereas SDRAM sends once...200 Mhz on both would mean an effective 400 Mhz for DDR.
I'm currently using a Radeon DDR 64 Meg.

Yeah...you'll have no problem running Gothic with either of them.
I'd say the GF2 ti is faster than my Radeon (depending on circumstances of course,but generally) and it's really not that dependant on cards.
The main thing is most likely RAM since the world's seemless.(only loading's when entering mines and the temple)
Both would run the game without problems,what I've been trying to say (and Gorath) is that the GF2 ti is a better card than the MX.
Another option you could look at is the Kyro 2 depending on how you prefer to play your games...
It won't be as fast as the GF2 ti in low res or 16-bit,but at high res and 32-bit it'll beat the GF2 ti,especially a 32 meg version.(depending on how much overdraw there is how big the difference will be...with UT for instance it's effective,with Q3A less so)
I'd *guess* that it should handle Gothic pretty nicely since the world's so big...especially when you're in a town where I'd guess there's quite a bit of overdrawing happening.
I don't have any experience of it though,so I won't guarantee it's as good with Gothic...

To summarize it again:
Lists sorted from slow to fast.
The GeForce2 series (GTS, Pro, Ti, Ultra) are good and fast cards, the GeForce2MX series (MX-200, MX, MX-400) are stripped down versions. The performance difference is huge.
Kyro cards offer good value for money, but they can be pretty tricky. Only buy such a card if you know what you are doing.
The card to buy is IMO a GeForce 2 Pro/Ti/Ultra with 64MB + tv-out. |
