I think ANYTHING is better than Morrowind's approach to combat.
Skills or no skills, please show me someone especially someone with the rank of a "swordsman" who sneaks up on a victim from behind, silently lifts his sword for the deathblow and ... misses.

I mean come on. The characters we're playing in RPGs are no two year olds (and even they would hit a sleeping mudcrab from behind with a plastic sword), they are adults on the edge to become heroes.
If such a person swings his sword at something and that something doesn't dodge or block he should definately hit it.

When playing Morrowind I always wonder if my hero has a serious eye-hand-coordination problem. Can someone with such a handicap be the saviour of the world ?

Besides that melee combat in Morrowind was downright boring.

I dont like acrade style fighting games were all you do is slam buttens and postion characters. It is boring to me and I hate to see CRPGs go that way, esp. TES which is one of my favorate serous of games. Morrowind had already gone too far toward non-interactive combad. Press butten release, press butten release. In Daggerfall i could alteast make different attacks by making different motions with my hands which made combat more fun. And for games with auto attack, turn on attack and wait to win, is great for MMORPGs because you need the time to chat. In a singel player game it is boring.

Morrowind had the same three attacks that Daggerfall did, that worked the same way. You probably had the "use best attack always" option chosen.

If most of you find rpgs boring and unrealistic, why play them? Do you want Doom with dialogue?

I don't know about Daggerfall, but in Arena, you had to move the mouse to swing, if I recall.

Um, because you made that up?
