played the german version..
not bad, but also a little bit strange... maybe due to the makers environment (russia). dunno.
Sometimes very strange voice comments from your party members, no sense making quests, no real direction in quests which you could descibe as non-linear gameplay maybe.
Whats good is the turnbased combat, the variety of weapons and such.
i picked it up for 10 bucks, so its ok for me |

Vid,
what game in terms of gameplay would this be comparable to? x-com? JA? I've been looking for a decent (nah, make it ANY) tactical turn-based game along those line with a sci-fi bend. (ToEE is good, but man the bugs have to wait for a patch, and it's DnD) I kinda expect and can tolerate some weirdness what with translation from foreign language (like arx fatalis), but would it be worth for combat alone? the reviews are far and between. some say it's turn-based even OUT of combat. if that's true, is it a big annoyance? thanks in advance. |

roqua: no. it has not the tactical depth of x-com combat.
combat though is fun and strategical, but seems a bit more arcade..
you can choose your type of movement (kneeing, standing, running) which give you different options. and of course there are different shooting modes for the various rifles you get (precise, quickfire and so on)
to be honest: i havenīt played very far into the game, so i really cannot say how the quests and story will work out, but until now it seems a little bit bland and without direction.
ah, i forgot to mention: music is quite cool =)
i would have paid maybe twice as much, but not more.
(one could find the game very quickly in the bargain bin here in germany)
ballistic:
yes, Toee is crashing to my desktop every hour or so, and i have to reboot for letting it run again... But the combat is just pure heaven
if you talk about x-com combat, it has some similarities, but the whole base management, science and such are of course not there.
the whole game is indeed turnbased. And yes, this can be sometimes really an annoyance.
But there is (until the point i got at least) combat behind every corner.
By the way: have you heard of UFO: Aftermath? it should be out until now and is a new game, cloning the old x-com games in some way.
I heard it has BG-style combat with an command queue, but i have not played it yet.

thanks, Vid. will probably pick it up. it's budget priced here as well.
(as for ufo:afermath, I was a huge x-com fan, and I've kept an eye on UFO:A for some time, but, personally, it doesn't seem to be close to x-com that much (real time combat with pause, no vehicles, no multilevel indoor fighting (the base defence missions alone in UFO were hours of fun), it may turn out to be a great game on its own, but not an x-com sequel. perhaps, Gollop brothers will get back to the franchise after LSN) |
