I've been sent on a quest for raw ebony so does anyone know a quick place to get some?

poke empty crates in Balmora, some probably contain ebony.
cross the river near Balmore (use the hanging bridge), there is mining cave ahead (near hill).

I would humbly suggest a visit to the Caldera Ebony Mines. You'll definetly find all you need there. If you don't know how to get to them. Go to Caldera and ask for specific directions to the Caldera Mining Company.
