Dark and Light: SoG - of launches, hackers and outages

The Settlers of Ganareth <s>beta</s> preview of Dark and Light has been operating for around week now. In that time there has been no official communication from NP3 and it has been impossible to make much sense of the forums - other than the launch appears to have been messy, with significant down-time. An update from NP3 has finally appeared, intriguingly blaming hackers for much of the login problems. Here's part of their post:
The whole development team worked on these issues in order to allow the players to explore the land of Ganareth under better conditions.

The main issue regarding the acces to SoG is the game login base. If the access delay is too long, the client is disconnected from the server upon connection. This was the case when there were too many requests at the same time, especially from pirates interested in new things !

The development team, with the help of its Australian partner BigWorld, worked on optimizing its components in order to offer better performances under high stress, and to protect the system against attacks.

The first SoG update was released on December 18th, and brought the following fixes :
- Some spell effects from players in the vincinity could make the client crash.
- Under some circumstances, another player appearing on your field of vision could make your client crah.
- A visual bug when your dragon soars, or when landing in a balloon.
- Visual fixes in NPC motions.
- But most of all, frame rate optimisation in case of overpopulation, which caused visual lag for some players.

When the server farm opened, we had massive attacks from all kinds of hackers. These attacks locked and saturated the login servers. This trial was a necessary experience for us, because it cannot be tested while in closed beta. Many optimizations have been made so far, but we are still working on this, so that we can use our server farm in an efficient, reliable and stable way.

We made a second update on December 22nd, upon server restart, in order to increase the general stability and to provide easier combat handling.

I love you guys.

You always write beta and cross it out in DnL newsbits.

Hackers are in every single online game from Everquest to Eve. Its scary really. Those guys are some pretty ingenious folks.
