Party update: My how things have changed.

Samurai: she's still plugging along, fighting with fang/ench wakaziki and Strongbow.
Ninja: Has decided to learn the sword skill to fight with Bushido blade; don't know if I mentioned it before, but he's also given up the bow for the boomerang shuriken
Monk: Currently my most damaging fighter (since the ninja's handicapped with low sword skill) going barehanded & sling.
Valkyrie: Still with Excalibur, although she went back to her spear of death for a while. When I picked up Drazic & Rodan, she went off the front line to the flank, where I needed a polearm instead of a sword. Traded in Demonsting for a Strongbow, too.
Gadgie: Blade Cuisinart & Omnigun. Because he's currently enthralled, he can't even use his 2 latest gadgets - jackhammer & water cannon. All of a sudden, he became a killing machine with these gadgets - and I quickly turned them useless (temporarily).
Bishop: Closing in on archbishopdom - I want her knowing every spell before I have this party retired. With Flamestaff & sling.

I made it to Al-Sedexus, became a templar, and dumped my excess items at Ferro's. Everyone's swinging full speed again, finally. Didn't finish the upper level yet, but took a break to disarm the bomb and do the unification quests (Which I finished! Skipped them first time through.). Now I am about to hit the sea caves, and then it's back to Al-Sedexus, finishing the upper level, and then AP here I come.

My formation is back to the five across the middle, with bishop in rear. It was kind of weird rearranging the party for Drazic & Rodan. I put samurai/ninja/monk in front, valkyrie (with polearm, not sword) & gadgie on flanks, and gave Drazic & Rodan spears to fight from the middle, with bishop in between. I did manage to position them most of the time where I could have 7 of 8 (the gadgie w/omnigun being the exception) attack with melee weapons, which made for a massacre.

Interesting, i can't help wondering why you wait so long to kill Al-S--i usually do that before i get any further than shopping at Ferro's; it makes the rest of everything so much easier when nobody's hexxed, and i've never had the Rapax turn red from it. The hardest part here is El-D, and i've gotten him as young as L15 with 4 chars. (switched to Easy).
My update: #20 is standing in front of the Portal to AP.
#21 and 22 are working their way through the merchants, getting their final PP actions in before i apply the patch...i must then start another game for testing PP under the patch...but i will finish 20 upon patching.

You no like... If you make regular use of PP, as it appears you do, you'll have to completely rethink your strategy. About the only way you can work it is to invest points at level-up because practice just won't work well- a failure is catastrophic. Of course, after all the playing you've done, you might have a trick up your sleeve we haven't thought of.

The Rapax are red long before I get there (both times now). Between the Rapax in Trynton & killing the Rapax assassin for the T'Rang, they're out to kill me. So killing Al-S first doesn't help me. So I slaughter El-Dorado (who never seemed as tough as you describe), meet Al-S, and kill Rapax left and right (generally good XP, even though it's annoying to fight so many) until I become a templar. Then I can explore the castle at my leisure.

First time through, when I killed Al-S (as templars), the Rapax turned hostile on me again as soon as I killed her (even without me killing her minions).

My plan this time was to finish the upper level & unification quests, finish the upper level of the castle, and then kill her. But in rescuing Drazic & Rodan, I turned them hostile. [I later checked a walkthrough, and discovered that they can be rescued with hostility; but instead of getting the key from the king, I just figured out which sentry would have it and started the slaughter by killing him for the key. It was a slaughter - those Rapax never came close to threatening my party.] So now when I go back to the castle I'll have more fighting to do.

BTW, I was frustrated by the T'Rang tracker and figuring out where to put it. I knew I had to be in the right spot, but I couldn't get the game to accept my placement of it. I checked the walkthrough, found out I was right, and went back to trying. For whatever reason, the hot spot on the orange button seems awfully small to me (since I had tried it there before without it working).

My approach as well. While the rapax battles get extensive, I enjoy the mindless slaughter.

Well, my current crew is in the home stretch. I've cut a little out this time, and the end-game is a little different. We diffused the bomb and then went straight to AP. I never visited the Rapax Away Camp, and have managed to stay a templar. I also didn't shoot down the black ship this time.

Anyway, upon entering AP, I was stunned to find nobody waiting for me. The Rapax Prince and all his cronies are nowhere to be found. OTOH, General Yamir and Z'Ant are there, sort of. There's two corpses, and one of my party said "Looks like the Umpani and Trang won't be ascending after all" Z'Ant being there is a little off, since I allied with the Umpani and killed Z'Ant this time thru. We've placed the DD and are nearing the temple for the CM.

Hey! that's pretty funny--i just got back from dropping off the CM--i always send it first so i can put my Infy Helm back on. You beat me to bumping the thread by such a tiny bit!!!
No Prince, No Away Camp? isn't that it? I didn't do any of that stuff either, for the last few finishes.(editing myself a second time: No!!! it's the Al-Offspring that doesn't show up if you don't do Al-Sedexus!!!) Thayat's righight! it's the road to the next Temple that has the Prince...

The Prince's army was always waiting for me at the "central plaza" by the three statues. If he shows up on the road to one of the temples, I may still get a visit. I'll keep you posted.

BTW, it's the DD that forces you to keep the Serenity Helm on, so that would be the one you'd want to do first. Also, the Infinity Helms are either heavy or medium armor, so you should have a spellcaster that you can shift the trinity over to along with the Serenity Helm,

Sorry if you posted again before my corrections.
I usually switch my Bishop to Lord at the end, specifically because of the Infy Helm. Then i store the DD in a chest until i have a portal right to the Temple where you put it. Then i'm without Infy only long enough to talk to Altheides.
Some games everyone is a hybrid all the way through...

Well, either the Prince shows up in different locations, or I'm getting REALLY senile. He (and his merry Rapax band) was waiting for me half way up the AD branch, along with Al-Ook (yep, I actually used the name "Ook the Mook" ). That makes three wins. I picked up Vi with a portal just before meeting the Savant, so I got her additional conversations in the ending this time.

I'm going to fire up some games I was supposed to be playing when I got sucked into Wiz8 again- Gothic1, Morrowind (I've spent a lot of time with it, but never really got anywhere), and Jagged Alliance2. I'm guessing I'll be back to Wiz8 before too long, though.

I thought the CoC made the game a little too easy, so I probably won't do the faerie ninja again. The gadgeteer was interesting, but I think I prefer a bard. The Valk was OK, but other classes can use polearms successfully (I've given one to my ranger a few times), so I doubt I'll revisit that class. The psionic started slow and ended slow, but was a real beast in the mid-game. Might consider playing that again. The more I play, the more I value a mage in the early- and mid-game. Several of the good buffs (missle shield in particular) are in the wizard's spell book and hybrids can't get them until you're nearly to Trynton. I'm thinking a mage or bishop is pretty much mandatory. Some day, I'll try going without a ranger, but not any time soon. The biggest thing I noticed was that, towards the end, all 6 characters were meleeing most of the time. Monsters get awful resistant to magic late in the game, so melee was simply more reliable. Plus, I had two characters with cursed weapons, so ranged combat wasn't as appealling as usual. I'm beginning to understand why otter class-switches in the end-game, although I'm still not sure I want to do that (it still seems like cheating to me for some reason). I ended up with everyone at or near level 24. In spite of my best efforts, I only managed 1 character that got 100% of the XP possible, although 2 others were on track until AP. My crew:
Valk with Trang stun rod (extended range with high paralyze %)
Ninja with CoC (vicious!)
Ranger with Mauler and Diamond Eyes (dumped the ax mid-game just to see what otter was so hyped about- I think he's right)
Psionic with some extended range staff
Gadg with Fang (broke my "no swords" rule)
Mage with Staff of Death (cursed, extended range, chance to kill or hex)

Since I know Linda, Charles, and Brenda follow my posts closely , a HUGE thank you to Sir-Tech for a wonderful game that just might finally knock MM7 out of my all-time-absolute-favorite-game ranking.

#20 just finished!!!
Hobbit Samurai, Rawulf Lord, Liz Bard8/Fighter, and Hobbit Bish18/Lord
Hey, dteowner: if you like a Ranger with Mauler/DE, just think about the Lord's Dual Wield bonus!!!

Actually, when I build my next party, I was planning on giving it a try. Because I changed to the dual maces with the ranger so late, he finished with the related skills only into the upper 60's and his strength only made it to 86. Even that low, he was still dealing some pretty good damage with the occasional KO. I'm thinking that my unsatisfying experiences with Lords so far just might be reversed with this new growth path.

Dual Wield is always easier if you can use the same weapon class in both hands (Weapons Skills go up twice as fast), and in W-7 there were Polearms and not-just-for-Sam Swords for the off-hand. Here you have to be a Sam to get 2 Swords, or you can use Maces or Wand/Staff.
Sam is good at Dual from the Sword bonus, but only Lords and Fighters can combine bonuses: Dual and Close plus Mauler's Mace bonus. Lord's melee stats are higher, but Fighter's Berzerk mode evens that up in terms of damage. Of course, with little parties, the Lord's Magic is also a consideration...

Late last night, I put together another party and did the lower monestary. I still plan to play a different game, but party creation is just too much fun...

I decided that I was going to go melee-heavy this time because of the way things turned out last time. First was the faerie bishop. Next came the lord- I chose a dwarf for the first time in a long time. Next came a mook bard (she'll end up with a giant sword). Then a human monk (I've played lots of these, but it's my favorite class and I didn't want a dull party like last time). Finally, I put together a mook ranger (another giant sword candidate). I thought and thought about what to use for #6. I had all my spell books covered, with three of them doubled and a bard on top. I had two obvious tanks, and two more that would actually do well in melee if developed properly. So I finally said screw it and went with a 5 character party.

They did well so far- large mobs didn't cause too much trouble even though we were "missing" an attack, and Gregor spread his attacks around so nobody was ever in much danger.
