Gothic 2's system specs are pretty hefty, though, for games nowadays they're getting to be average. I can run Gothic 2 on my PIII 933 with 384 RAM and a GeForce 2 MX/MX400 with only minor framerate issues (the city of Khorinis is where the worst of it happens, as to be expected), but nevertheless, I am worried that I will not be able to play Gothic 3 due to my system. My dad has talked about upgrading our system, but he hasn't gotten around to it. I was wondering if anybody can give an accurate estimate as to what Gothic 3's sytem requirements will be. _________________ OMG! WTF?! MONKEYS!!!!

Rumors are that Gothic 3 will be released Q2 2005, which is an insanely long time. And it will most likely be delayed for several more months.
So I dont think you should be worrying about sys reqs right about now. |

No need to be *worry*. You definitely will not be able to run the game on that machine at an acceptable speed. (Anything else would surprise the hell out of me.) As already mentioned, the game is supposed to be done in about two years. A P933 + GF2 MX400 is already being considered outdated nowadays (well, this is an Athlon 800 owner speaking here), so I wouldn't expect a game that'll come out in late 2005 (probably even 2006 if it gets delayed like the majority of the software in development) to run well or at all on your current machine.
They're definitely going to use a new engine and I recall KaiRo stating that the characters will probably look like the HL2 ones (probably better). Just a hint at the potential hardware requirements. |

...the GIII engine is new for the series, but actually it's been around for a while now. If anything of it will remain in the finished product is not sure yet... we'll see.
Apart from that: You'll need a new processor and video card sooner or later, anyway. Many games don't support the MX cards anymore. |

I know there is some new technology that will allow us to use our whole hard disk as our RAM , so we would never need any RAM chips... forget the name though... But of course that hard disk will use new material to produce! The most exciting thing is we could easily get dozens of GB of RAM to use , so Gothic the RAM hog will never be a problem any more...
The very problem is, maybe there is still a long time for us to wait for that technology being used in product with massive numbers...

Yeah, by 2005 we'll probably have a new computer anyway. _________________ OMG! WTF?! MONKEYS!!!!

It's not a crash helmet, just a steel pot with wool 'undies'. |

That technology has been available since the dawn of time and its called virtual memory and it is very slow, as is a hard drive, compared to memory chips. _________________ "You two are a regular ol' Three Musketeers." |

Wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Something is wrong... the reply I past above is to Jaz...oh, still I cannot sleep now...
Jung:
The technology I mentioned above is NOT virtual memory, everyone knows virtual memory... it is a completely new technology... damn, I froget the name of it!! The speed of that hard disk is much faster than what we are using nowadays, so we could it as RAM... It's made by some comepelety new material, seems first mentioned by a Japonic company... _________________ 道可道也,非恒道也。名可名也,非恒名也。

A spinning hard disk with moving parts, or some type of new non volatile RAM? Eventually, when SRAM(static RAM like is in USB keys) gets fast/cheap enough, it can be used in place of a hard disk and memory and we will have instant on computers. That will happen, but I doubt that anything similar to todays hard disks will be anywhere near the speed of RAM on a chip. _________________ "You two are a regular ol' Three Musketeers." |

Hmmm, being an expert at this I sense some serious topic drift here ... so to bring it back with a jerk
@Jaz - So, if you were to hazard a guess, what would you think minimum system specs would be ... assuming they keep the currently planned engine? _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

@Lintra: No idea.
The main game engine in itself isn't what defines a game's system specs. At least not alone. It also depends on other stuff like the physics engine (which usually is independent of the game engine), AI model and polygons/graphical details used. And, of course, on the minor fact of the possible presence of memory leaks and other 'background bugs', depending on how fastidious the programmers were . |

Riiiiiiggghhht.
So, what you are telling me is, "Calm down, and wait and see. Time will tell".
I just hope I don't have to upgrade for G3. I upgraded about a year ago, and it is a delight playing good games at the speed they are *supposed* to be played ... but I am not sure Mrs Lintra is going to agree to any major upgrades in the near future (read near future as 3 years!!). _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

The main difference between the new 'hard disk' and virtual memory is:
We cannot get our computer start without RAM chips no matter how much virtual memory we have, but computer with the new 'hard disk' DOES NOT need any RAM chips to run any more...
Maybe it will be better if I did not use 'hard disk' to destribe it, but it is not like our hard disks of nowadays(while anyway it is a disk made by some 'hard' material ), just the combo of traditional hard disk and RAM... The work elements of that diak is quite different from the traditional hard disks'... I remember it was a researcher of Solid Physics who told me that months ago... Anyway, I am not an expert on that thing... _________________ 道可道也,非恒道也。名可名也,非恒名也。
