This ain't a request for help or anything, but merely an observation. I'm a newbie and I saw all of these mentions of Arnika from the shopkeeper in the monastary and various notes lying around, so I supposed that it would be the best place to go...
How wrong I was
When I got there, I essentially got reamed by a guy named Myles (who had 179 HP vs 57 for my best character, and who got 4-6 attacks per turn!) I actually managed to preserve my characters for a bit with hefty usage of Guardian Angel and heals, and Myles fleed. But then I ran into bands of hostile enemies that had 100+ HP and who also got multiple attacks per turn, and who all seemed resistant to terror/sleep/sonic boom etc.
Heh, I thought Arnika would be a nice reprieve from the endless battles that plagued the road leading up to it, but I guess that Arnika is merely a deathtrap to be avoided for now; I'll see where the other paths take me... Trial and error by dying and reloading

Don't know whether you did it by accident or by plan, but you're killing the good guys... Myles is a friend. In fact, you can recruit him for your party. The 100+ HP guys you're seeing are most likely Higardi patrols, which will actually fight WITH you against the real bad guys. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

Unless you want to start killing any and everybody, you're off to a bad start.... Check your radar at the bottom of the screen. People who are green are friendly at the moment. Myles starts of as your friend, so why did you try to kill him? Not that I cared about Myles long-term, but some people do.
Arnika is definitely most people's first destination. You're told to go there, and how to get there. With skills to know how to use terrain to your advantage, it's mostly survivable even when you first get there. (Hint: If you're having problems, follow the guards around.) And there are people there who you definitely want to meet sooner rather than later to acquire things from.
Many people say the early part of the game is trial and error by loading and reloading. But don't expect to ever dominate the game - the autoleveler will see to it that you don't (unless maybe you make it to level 40 or so).
Most importantly, DON'T GIVE UP!!! _________________ The world itself shifts and changes and fades to mist like the strings of a minstrel's harp, and mayhap the dreams we forge are more enduring than the works of kings and gods.-Robert E. Howard

They started off as red dots right when I got to town. Myles just randomly decided to attack. I walked right up to him with open arms and got greeted with a slashing dagger... Did I provoke him in some way?

That's not the way it's supposed to go. Have you a) used the No-CD crack or b) used a trainer? Something isn't right if Myles attacks immediately. Now, if you attack him, even by accident, I'm pretty sure all the Higardi turn on you. I would highly recommend that you go back to an old save (before entering Arnika for the first time), because you're gonna be miserable for a long time if Arnika isn't a relatively safe base of operations. I would say this is important enough to do a reinstall and start over if you can't isolate the problem. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

No I have not used any cracks or trainers whatsoever. I have the three disc 1.24 version of the game. I just reinstalled and went back to an old save (along arnika road). I went into Arnika again, and Myles (and everyone else in town) attacks me on sight! I have no idea what is wrong; I have not attacked any humans in the game, except for some "Higardi Raiders" in the monastary and along the path to Arnika, and only because they attacked me first.
Burz (shopkeeper in monastary) and I were still on good terms when I left, and I couldn't talk to that robot in the monastary (although she was not hostile when I left; she just wouldn't talk).
What should I do?? I don't want to have to restart, because there's always a chance that the same problem will happen again... What could be the problem??

IF you truly left the Monastary on good terms with the shopkeeper and IF you truly did nothing to initiate an attack on Myles when you first enter Arnika, then there must be some serious bug at work (although I have never heard of this happening to anybody else). Myles (as others said) is a good guy and wants to join your group. The Higardi Patrol (inside Arnika) are good guys and will help you. In general, ONLY if you attack any of them (or other good folks in Arnika) first will they attack you.
Did you buy the game new or used or is it on loan to you from a previous owner? If it is second hand, then there is a possibility that the game was fouled in some way (either deliberately or otherwise).
Did you start your characters fresh within the game or were they imported in some way? If they were imported, then there is the possibility the characters are fouled in some way. _________________ When everything else in life seems to fail you - buy a vowel. |

Yes I bought the game new at Electronics Boutique, and yes I started my characters fresh in this game. I TRULY have not initiated any attacks on anyone in Arnika (and as I said I tried going from an earlier save to Arnika, to make sure I didn't do it by accident the first time.... no dice).
Was I supposed to do something with that silent character in the monastary (presumably a robot?)?
Also, I remember hitting some switches in the monastary that broke some glass; can that be why they hate me?
Perhaps that "Higardi Raiders" and "Higardi Bandits" are really allies with the people in Arnika, but in that case, why did they start off attacking me??
I'm really frustrated right now, and have gone back to two earlier saves (pre-Arnika), and have entered Arnika for the first time several times (via reloading).
I'm thinking about returning the game, because of this and other random crash bugs I've experienced (which I can tolerate, if the game itself works right).
Is there any reason why this could be happening? Corrupt files or some sort? But in that case, why would it not be corrected when I reinstalled the whole game? And if it's corrupted saves, then why doesn't going to earlier saves fix it?
?!?!?!

I checked the Wiz8 web site for the patches, but it said that my version (1.24) is already the latest patched version of the game. And all three of my discs are version 1.24.

I am not sure what silent character you mean - a description please. However, the only real npc in the monastary is vendor you already mentioned.

No, breaking the glass is fine.

Nope, those are bad guys and you are supposed to kill them (else they will kill you ).

I can just imagine you are!

At this point if this were happening to me, I likely would be thinking of the same thing. However, you should really try making a new group from scratch and giving them a go - just hustle as fast as the game will allow to Arnika to see if it happens again. Please understand (it should be apparent from the posts here) that this has not happened to me (or anybody else as far as I can tell). It DEFINATELY is NOT supposed to happen.

Well, there certainly IS a reason since everything happens in this world (as far as we understand reality that is) for some reason. However, unfortuntely, just because there IS a reason does not mean we can know that reason . If you started another group from scratch AND it happened again to that group, then I would presume you had managed to get a VERY fouled game CD (fouled in a very strange way by the way). Then I would suggest taking it back and asking for another set of discs. The probability of two sets of CDs with the same problem is fairly low. _________________ When everything else in life seems to fail you - buy a vowel. |

i have version 1.2.4 too. In my package was a yellow note that tolds me to load the newest patch from the wizardry website, so it could be that installing the patch is an option for you, too. (maybe a corrupt file will be overwritten, who knows ?) _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild= |

By the way, if you are not in too much of a hurry to return the game you might try emailing the Wiz tech support folks. _________________ When everything else in life seems to fail you - buy a vowel. |

contacted tech support... |
|
OK, i've been emailing tech support, and they say that what most likely happened was that I corrupted my saves at some point while i was in the monastary, such that burz and the Higardi guys now treat me as a hostile (something about how the flag for those guys was now set to negative or something). It most likely happened during one of the crashes that I had, and all further saves along the same line maintained the corruption...
So I'm starting over and have made it into upper monastery so far; have been too sick of the game to make it to arnika just yet. If this don't pan out, i'm gonna be a mighty peeved customer...
