Indie Devs the Best Hope for Innovation? @ RPG Vault

In the second installment of "View from the Bottom", independent developer, Jeff Vogel (Spiderweb Software) comments on cutting-edge development in gaming. In the article, Mr. Vogel wonders from where the next innovative push will come.
Indie developers have a real purpose in this world. They make little niche products for markets too small for Activision. They make many new puzzle games for the casual audience. Or, at least, the same old puzzle game again and again. They rewrite Asteroids... because someone has to.

But truly innovative games? The sort you're only going to see a few more times in your lifetime?

Those will come from Electronic Arts.

Please feel free to kill yourself now.
Read the rest of Vogel's thoughts at RPG Vault.

So because he himself can't innovate, he thinks that no indie developer out there has the ability to.

Innovation comes from creative genious. Creative genious is not generated through having cash.

Mount & Blade, and Roma Victor are both examples of innovative games, made by indie developers. Each has their own way of going about the process, but the fact is, innovation is possible in the indie market.

And I would argue, innovation is still more possible outside of corporations, than inside of them.

That's pretty much what he was saying.

You have to read Jeff Vogal's writings with a heavy dose of sarcasm.

Sarcasm and wisdom.

It is all nice and touchy feely to think cash has nothing to do with innovative games.

Its like saying money does not buy happiness.

But take a happy person and give him money and his life sure gets a heck of alot better.

If my game ever gets created it would be very innovative and would be unlike any game you have ever played. I hope it's well liked by the public and everyone has a chance to play it. I am currently taking steps that should get the game out in the future but it will be a several years and probably over 10 years. (especially since computers might not be able to handle it how I have envisioned it currently)

I'd rant, but then it's Jeff Vogel.

Whomever hasn't played his games should not even try to squrim. He has made some of the best RPG's out there lately (as in the core of the game and not having patric stewart engaging the particle effects on the next-gen graphics engine based on DirectPocket CCVXI)

I'm really curious to see the rpg codex reaction from this. I can't wait

Anyway the man has points. But I think he is talking about "innovation" in a way the IGN public understands it. Take for example that dance-dance thingie. I haven't seen it, never used but as far as it goes it was one damn innovation (at least for those azn hopping around people).

Sometimes it's 'who', not 'whom'.

It could have been Electronic Arts alright, they made awesome games. EA on the other hand only makes crap.

Since they changed their name they haven't done a single good game, and not a single RPG.

I don't want innovation from Indie devs, I want the same old game I love in a new package.
