Gothic 2 Combat? Am I just a big noobie?

Ok I know its late but I heard good things so i finialy got gothic 2. And it seems pretty cool. But I can hardly kill a god damn thing! Goblins give me trouble. Bandis will destroy me and I cant stand those damn bee things. This is like the first 10 minutes of the game in the first chapter. So am I just a big newb or is there something in the combat im missing? Help if you can.

First, this belongs in Gothis 2 Spoilers. Moving there now...

Second, try to get to town first and do quests there to gain experience. Then, train up your strength. Once you do that you'll find those critters are less challenging. There is also a bow outside of Xardas tower (at least there was in the demo). It's great for taking out enemies before they reach you. That's how I handled the bandits. Also, go rest if you get hurt, you can always rest in Xardas' tower. Take meat off of animals and eat it to regain health (cook it to get a better health bonus). Last, find a better weapon as soon as possible.

1. Wrong forum.. never mind..

2. i belive so.. whan i first played gothic i didnt understant how to play.. everything seemd wierd.. you need to run and than press mouse1 botton to hit right? if so you can just press the mouse1 botton and than press foword... if you see the creature/bandits name above him its ok just press foword and you will hit him.. you can alsow give him a hit from the side if you prees on the left or the right insted of pressing foword.. to defence (its only defence from weapons.. no efect on monsters..) press backword insted of worord to defence..
Good luck with the best game ever!!

Even I had a few problems, and I have completed gothic1 a lot of times. Gothic2 can be really hard from beginnig. The most impostant thing is that you can kill the most creatures from the start but if you only attack 1 at a time! If you are attacked by 2,3 or more creatures it will be much harder. So try to get away single creature form the pack. If you really must fight multiple creatures (like dose damn goblins), try to find an object, that will cover your back or a tight spot, where only 1 creature can get trough. This way you will have to fight less creatures at a time. Also remember. Every time you hit the enemy, it's not necesarry you hit him the most you can, because he can do a block. You'll think that your week, because you won't do almost any damage to him. Try to attack him while he's moving or from the side and you will do much more damage to him. And keep exploring. You'll see, soon you won't take almost no damage from goblins.

I found that once you put 30 into '1-hand weap', the fighting in the game instantly becomes trivial. 29 is no better than 10 for what I'm talking about - 30 gives you the better swinging of the sword.

If I could have 30 in '1-hand weap' and be a lvl 1 character with virtually no hitpoints, I could still melee an orc warrior (it's all in the timing of your swings).

The % of your fighting skilles means how much % you have to make critical hits... if you have 29& it is better than 10% coz you have more chance of getting a critical hit.. and its the same thing with 2H...

The bandit will not attack you if you easily talk with him. Keep asking him questions and at the end he'll not attack you 'cause you're a "friend" from the mining camp

You are weak in the beginning. This will improve when you have your first armour (soon) a better weapon and a bit more strength + weapon skills.
Gothic 2 uses hard opponents to lock some areas. If something kills you with one hit do something else and return later.
Goblins are stronger than in other games. In masses they are a serious thread if given a chance to surround you.

Bandis will destroy me
This is normal. Avoid fights against human opponents for now. Theyīre hard to kill unless you want to use the fireball scroll(s) you should have found by now.
The chat with the first bandit can (and should) be ended peacefully. He has important informations for you.

Use your bow.

A few tips:
-Explore every squarecentimeter from the start to the position of the first bandit. You can find at least five places with loot with little or no combat.
-The supply situation is uncritical throughout most of the game. Donīt waste spell scrolls, arrows and food but also donīt hesitate to use them if a battle or a quest require it. A fireball scroll opens some strategic options.
-G2 has two completely different combat systems. Infos can be found in our review. Try them both.
-Learn the necessary timing to use combo attacks.
-Save often and in different slots. Enable quicksave in the gothic.ini if you want but _DO NOT_ use it during interaction (combat, talk, etc. ) or you risk a damaged savegame. With a bit of discipline it works pretty well.
-The slower you play the easier the game.

Going from 29 to 30 in combat skill (1-hand weap in my case) is more than just gaining the percentages - At 30 you get the next level of weapon fighting styles.

I can melee a hundred orc warriors in a row and never get hit once with 30 in 1-hand sword. It doesn't matter what sword I use or any of my other stats. The game gives you a rediculously quick side-to-side slashing skill that makes the game trivial for fighter types once you hit 30 in sword.

If you leave your sword at 29 or below you fight with very poor skill and can't stop an orc from hitting you (29 is the same as 10 for your fighting styles).

I'm worried about the expansion because just making things tougher doesn't stop me from timing my swings and killing everything easily. I still need to go through the game as a mage, I'll try to avoid swords completely then.

If you select train +5 skill (instead of +1) for 1 h weapon at 29 you wil get 34 without having to pay or raise your 2 h weapon skill (still at 10). a quirk in the system.

i dont think that the monsters will only be harder but i read somewhere that in the addon it will be harder to raise levels and cost more exp. to gain skill in melee and range

The most important thing of gothic 2 is that it's quitte diffrentfrom any other rpg i know. because of the free 3dworld it is the first game where you can encounter monsters that are stronger then you. it is not the meaning of the game to kill everything you see on sight
you get stronger by wearing better armor, weapons, training your skills and leveling up (hp's). don't try to learn all the fighting skills but specialise on 1 kind for example 1h or bow. when you come to the city the first time there is a whole lot to do there, you can get a lot of xp by doing all the quests. in the beginning of the game i,m always a long time in the city and the nearby countryside by the eastgate collecting herbs.
do not think the herbs are usseles, in the beginning they can be a real help for getting lots of money. as a mercenary or paladin i sell all the healing plants and mana plants and also diggers meat. the dark mushrooms you should eat you get +10 on your mana when you eat 50 of them

I'm wearing heavy dragon hunter armor, have 111 strength, 100% on 2-handed, 400 hp and a large ore dragon slayer 2 handed and i'm having lots trouble on the island. The whole game I always try to draw a monster away from the pack but here it's almost impossible. 4 orc elites, 2 regulars and a shaman all attack me and I last about 5 seconds. The combat is difficult. I can't focus on different monsters quickly enough and while i'm swinging at one orc, he's just blocking while the others pound me to death.

I tried leading them back to the ship but then my shipmates all just get slaughtered.

try to walk around, focus, hit and then walk away, do that over and over.
i is difficult, but when you manage to do it, the game is a lot easier!
