I've just found out that Scorpio, the only person in the game that can train you in the crossbow skill is only level 1 in the skill.
So...how can he train you in level 2 if he only knows level 1?

Has he got some scam going on or what?
In fact no NPC in the game has level 2 in the crossbow skill.
I just thought that was interesting.

Interesting, the master knows less than the student.

In computers yes, but that's because I learned from masters of that trade. But I don't know more about calculus than Sir Issac Newton did (after all he invented it). And I'm sure my progenitors knew more about carpentry, farming, hunting, sword fighting, and blacksmithing than I will ever know. So to say I know more than they did is not necessarily true. Math and science, yes. Basic survival and practical skills, no.

But, Crossbow is only one aspect of fighting.

Though I do understand your point.

Eg: A friend of mine recently graduated from actuarial sciences, it took him five or so years to do so (Maybe more). This was the norm for people who just wanted to practise their risk calculating, however to teach it, he would have needed about three more years of schooling.

That is less time than what it used to take over a hundred years ago (unless you count public education). A young boy would be apprenticed to someone who knew a trade (i.e. blacksmith). Then, when they were older they would become a journeyman. Then several years down the road they would become a master. Same concept, you take years to learn and truely master a trade or field of study. Then when you are a master you can teach others.
I guess:
apprentice = bachelors degree
journeyman = masters
master = PhD

Well... here's a big surprise for you...

ALL the teachers in Gothic either have only level 1 in the skill they teach, or they don't have the skill at all!
Fingers for example doesn't have a single thieving skill!!!

Had to say that. I just had to defend Scorpio's honor here ... but it's true, you can look it up here:

After he takes off with half of the castle armory, he has a heavy crossbow equipped.

Noticed something interesting if unimportant when possessing people... you take your animal skinning and declawing skills with you.

I took a guy from the old mine on a leasurely trip across the countryside: my, did we skin lots of wolves and lurkers!

The other possible explanation: every NPC has hunting skills...
