Old Computer...
700mhz Athlon, 384mb SDR RAM, GF3 ti500
Gothic was just plain slow with all the options turned up at 1024x768x32. With my video card I expected to have no problems, but framerates were choppy.

New Computer...
Athlon XP 1900+ (~1.6ghz), 512mb DDR RAM, Same Videocard
Everywhere there were hiccups and slowdowns it is now super smooth. Better yet, loading and saving are much faster (half or less previous times).

I basically upgraded for this game, as it's the only game I am playing right now that taxed my previous system. It was expensive, but worth it, as Gothic now runs great.

No. If you read the latest shootout at http://www.anandtech.com youŽll see that there is nothing dramatically wrong with buying an affordable board like the Epox 8KHA+, this IWill board or even the very cheap Elitegroup m/b.

I agree, I recently upgraded from an Athlon 650 to a Athlon XP 1600+ (overclocked to 1.6Ghz) and it really smoothed out the game.
I like to play at 1024x768x32 will all options maxed with 2x antialiasing and 32tap anisotropic filtering. I also use the same card as I had before, a GF3. With the 650 it was playable but I would get slowdowns in the camps. Now it's smooth as can be. =)

Ha, I did the exact same thing
Upgraded from a duron 650 to an XP 1600+, and I use a Hercules Geforce3 Ti200.
But I use the XP on my "old" SDR motherboard for now.
Well I'm paying at 1024*768*32 with 2x FSAA as well and I can't complain! runs as smooth as silk.
However, If I turn on the frame counter I only get an average of 25 fps !!!!!!
