Well, my Bishop, my only pure magic user (the rest are hybrids), can learn Eye for an Eye, and she's only level 13. It basically depends on your Divinity (and hence Piety), and your skills in the Divine Magic group. So, if you have a Bishop, practice, practice, practice! Use healing spells often, and keep casting high-level Magic Screens.

As for the big temple battle, I tried it once at level 12, but got my butt kicked, probably because I didn't have Element Shield OR Soul Shield.I managed to fire off a Death Cloud from the Staff of Doom in the first round or so, and that worked wonders with the cultists. The Death Lords murdered me, though. Now, my Bishop has both Element and Soul Shield, as well as Summon Elemental. So maybe I'll try it again.

I sugest that you have your hybrids learn element shield & soul shield as well. This will permit you to get both of them up in the first round, which I found to be critical when fighting certain monsters. This is especially true when you get to certain areas where you'll be fighting almost constantly and wanting these spells up all the time - you can rotate casters for more frequent casting ability.

Thanks for the suggestion; I had already taken that into account, but thanks anyway. Right now, my plan is to have my Valkyrie (Vi) and Samurai cast all of the outside-battle protection spells (Armorplate, Missile/Magic Shield, Enchanted Blade, etc.) before the battle, so my Bishop doesn't have to waste any of her magic points. Then, once I'm in, I'll have Vi cast Soul Shield, my Bishop cast Element Shield, my Gadgeteer use the magic mirror on someone, and everyone else can either throw some acid bombs or canned elementals.
