FPS is fine, but other responses REALLY slowing down!!!!

I've been playing Morrowind for awhile. It seems like things are REALLY slowing down. For example, when I re-load a saved game, it may take 2 or 3 minutes to complete the "clearing data", followed by 2 or 3 minutes to complete the "initializing data", followed by only a few seconds to complete the "loading area" bargraphs.

Additionally, right-clicking will promptly bring up my inventory window, but then, when I left-click on say, a glass longsword and drag it onto my "paper doll" image, it may freeze for as long as 15-20 seconds before responding. Same goes for bartering. Hitting the spacebar to bring up the character dialogue window is fairly quick, but exchanging things while bartering also results in long 15-20 second pauses (freeze-ups).

The first many hours of game-play didn't exhibit the above symptoms, but things seem to be getting worse. On the other hand, there have been times when the long delays didn't occur, and I have no idea what was different. I have absolutely no plugins (other than Tribunal) installed.

Also, F.P.S. is not affected.

I wonder if fragmentation could be a culprit? Has anyone else witnessed these problems?

Thanks,
Dolmenlord.

While fragmentation could cause some of that, I'd point my finger at memory. How much RAM does your rig have, and how many programs are running in the background?

384 Megs of PC-133 at full-speed.

I should also mention that the patch for Morrowind as well as Tribunal is installed. What mystifies me is why, occasionally, these long game-save loading times and bartering response times are really fast. I have little running in the background, BTW, and have already tried shutting down non-essential tasks, with no apparent difference. I'm wondering if it's something in the game-save files themselves.
