Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Technology Interview @ Beyond 3D

Beyond 3D interviewed Gavin Carter about some of the technical aspects of Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion.
Could you briefly touch upon what changes will there be for Oblivion modders compared to Morrowind?

The editor has received a host of changes ranging from small to large. Many are brand new tools such as the heightfield generation tool, and the region generation tool to populate a large area with objects quickly. The dialogue and quest system has been redone to improve the workflow and tools have been added to better allow Havok objects to be manipulated in the editor. Modders will also have access to the entire range of AI functionality that we have at our disposal.
Those with a technical bent or modders should definitely read this article. You can find it at Beyond 3D.

Oh, for a moment I thought they had used some of the Bloom Shaders there too!

It's nice knowing what kind of technology is behind it

Yeah, Oblivion is definitly going to win the best RPG of the Year for 2006.

Desslock at PCG had the chance to play the PC version (new build) and said that the game looks absolutely fantastic. He played it on a high end PC with a single 7800GTX and noticed that it looked slightly better than the XBox360 versions he saw on the desks of the developers.

So it seems that they don't have framerate problems on PC anymore - if they ever had them on that system *g*

Oblivion will probably have framerate problems even on high end machines. Probably not everywhere.. but in places where there is a lot to display (like Balmora in MW), I'm sure there will be some slow down.

But that's ok. It's sort of a given for this medium that the latest and greatest games tend to have this problem.

I remember first playing U7 on a 386/16 machine. On that machine U7 had a horrid framerate. But I trudged through it because it was such an awesome game. At one point, I convinced my boss to let me take a 386/32 machine from work to my house every day so I could play on that. Yup... every day I'd disassemble that gigantic desktop PC, put it in my car... drive it home... trudge it up 3 flights of stairs into my apartment, set it up, and play... then take it all apart and put it in my car and take it back to work and get it all set up at work again before my shift started. Did that for like a month just to play U7 on a slightly better machine. LOL.

I just read that thread where Desslock and I presume an Oblivion Dev. over at QuarterToThree. Everyone is very excited... there's a lot of anticipation... everyone needs to just relax.

There WILL be framerate issues for many people.
There WILL be bugs.
There WILL be features MISSING that you hoped would be there
There WILL be aspects of the game you WON'T enjoy
Oblvion WON'T be like Ultima 7
Oblivion WON'T be like Ultima Underworld
Oblivion IS using leveled monsters

BUT

Oblivion will probably be a fun and awesome game. So don't worry. Be happy.
