Star Wars: KotOR (PC) Review @ Gamespy |
|
Gamespy has done a review on Star Wars: KotOR (PC), hailing it as the "best PC RPG of the year". They gave it 5 out of 5 stars. Here's an excerpt:

Like many PC gamers, I freaked a bit when I found out that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR) would be hitting the Xbox first. How could BioWare, the folks who have crafted some the best RPGs in recent memory, betray their loyal PC fans and sell out to the console world? I shouldn't have worried. KotOR on PC is, without question, the best PC RPG of the year, and possibly one of the best RPGs I've ever played. At the risk of not sounding objective, let me answer the question of how good KotOR is with this little anecdote:

On my second day of playing, I sat down at my desk and started playing the game at 10 am. From then on, I didn't get up for anything until 6 pm that night. Not lunch, not even the bathroom. That's how good KotOR is. It's got that obsessive/compulsive quality that keeps pushing you to solve just one more quest, to finish one more task, to go up one more level just to see what new stuff you can get. I'm truly thankful to have a job that requires me to play games, because I believe that if I played this game at home, my wife could sue for divorce on the grounds of neglect.

How pathetic.
Cons:
Some graphic stutter, even on high-end systems; not enough character models and customization options; various bugs.
but they still game it 5/5?
But Arx got 3/5 for not having "good" graphics and for being a first person rpg. |

uhm... I think the point is that despite the few flaws, he still liked it better than Arx? Could be just my wild imagination, though
Anyway - all reviews say the same... not having seen it myself yet, this is either the most overrated game ever, or maybe the reviewers have a point. Maybe. |

Well my impression of it after having logged about 40 hrs so far is that the game is rather remarkable. Addictive, polished, down right fun. Not "perfect" of course, but with way things are going a rating 4 to 4.5 out of 5 (using their raitng system) would not at all be inappropriate.
Gamespot gave the xbox version a 9.1/10. I'd say that's about right for the PC version, but I'll wait until I'm done before I say for sure. _________________ All shall hear the words of Karras...the words of Karras |

Hehe, I have also played KotOR for around 40 hours now and I must say that this game is amazingly addictive (just like the reviewer said) but it does have its faults. It is slow on my "15000 points 3DMark 2001 SE"-computer and the controls are ridiculously dumb (a 3D-game where you can't look up or down?!) and if you play it for like.. uh.. 8-10 hours in a row (hrmm!) it has a tendency to crash to desktop. Also, the backgrounds are very repetitive and the maps are way too small.
But the story! And the missions! And the dialogue! And the characters! It's sort of like Gothic 2 where the incredibly good things outweigh the bad things by a mile. I'd rate KotOR 4.5/5 or so. _________________ Swedes visit NordicGamers for the latest game reviews in swedish! |

Hmm... If folks with hi-end systems are still getting the occasional stutter, then I've really got to wonder what Bioware was thinking with the minimum hardware requirements. I'm running the game on a subpar system (P3 733, GeForce 3 Ti200, 384 MB RAM), and aside from the occasional stutter while running (so that I suddenly end up 50 ft forward, running into a wall) the game runs like a dream. Given that I'm 266 MHz under the min spec, I was really expecting it to perform like a dog.
As for the review... I'm only 7 hours or so into the game, and I'm having a ball, though I think the combat and inventory interfaces are incredibly awkward, and it is kinda strange that everyone on Taris seems to be a clone. Right now I'm expecting it to be worth about a 4.5 out of 5, which puts it pretty near tops in my book. I only hope Bioware gets a chance to make another Star Wars rpg. |

The point is that gamespy reviews have no consistency.
I like the game too, but it's not perfect. |
