Voice actors in Gothic 3

I know they've been criticized by bogus reviews, and people who don't understand the true "heart" of Gothic, but I always thought the voice acting was SPECTACULAR in the Gothic series. Best voice acting in any game - quantity and quality (imho).

Which voice actors in either Gothic series would you like to see carried over? I really think the following acted characters were fantastic:

Xardas (& others) - this man is exquisite. I don't mind meeting many with variations of his voice. He really kicked ass with Onar.

Gothic 1 Diego - this guy deserves an academy award.

Bodo - short, sweet, and unique voice acting.

Gorn - the positive light. This actor seems so genuine with everything he says. Really dedicated.

Cavalorn - the style and class of his British accent makes you wonder what he did to derserve incarceration.

Torlof - I love this guy. Great tough-guy American accent. He sounds straight out of Chicago, IL

I'm not a big Milton fan (besides Dar ) , but he's been with it from the beginning, so I wouldn't like to see him go. I think all the women need a little work too. Opinions?

Definitely. The voice acting in G1 was of very high quality. G2 wasn't quite as good, but overall I thought it was above average.

For sure bring this guy back. He has a commanding presence in his voice. He was overused in G2, though. This diluted his effect somewhat. Hopefully they will limit him in G3 to Xardas and perhaps a few other "authoritatvie" people.

Yes. The best voice actor in G1 and he was sorely missed in G2. The guy who played him G2 was fine with *other* voices, but I really wanted the old Diego back. I hope they can pick him up for G3. He sort of reminded me of Ramirez (Sean Connery) from "Highlander"

I've got no quarrel with any of these. In general, I would hope that they preserved all the same voice actors for G3.

Did you know that the voice of "you" is actually played by different actors in G1 & G2? At first, I couldn't tell the difference when I played G2. Then Jaz told me they were different actors. I compared them and it became clear. Even though the voices sound quite similar, the guy in G2 has a deeper tone. G1's hero had a slightly lighter, more soft-spoken voice.

As for who should play the hero's voice in G3 -- I could go either way. Both actors did a great job at voicing a sort of neutral/non-confrontational "everyman" guy.

The Highlander observation by both of you is excellent. I love that movie - but I didn't think of that. Definitely agree. I thought a lot of the voices were better in Gothic 1, but I still thought most of them were sweet in 2.

Xardas did have a lot of "clones" in 2. I was surprised at that.

Do we have any proof that "our hero" was a different voice actor? I've heard everyone on this board say so, but I'm still not convinced. It sounds to me like the same guy, on a different day, and possibly on different equipment. I stress "on a different day" because the voices are SO CLOSE - yet in Gothic 2 the voice is just deeper - as though he's speaking closer to a different mic, with different tones/motivation. Seems like 3/4 peoples' voices on this earth are always changing, and I think he's one of them. I didn't check the credits of both and until then, I'm not convinced.

If it's true, then I'm in favor of either. At first I thought, "What a wuss" but I grew to totally like the guy within a few hours. A different voice would not suffice.

generally, or at least at the beginning it was very frustrating to hear american english from nearly everybody. it just doesn't seem right in a fantasy world. here and there would be okay, but this is just a bit too much for me. but i got over it ;), it's a great game after all.

I hear ya man, and that was my initial impression also. I thought it worked out really well in the end - made it even more of a fantasy. Remember, they never give you an exact date of existance in Gothic, so between that, swords and bows, and modern American accents - it makes an interesting equation. Not so much another "time" as another "dimension." There's something special about a guy with a NY accent weilding a crossbow. It's unexpected and unique.

I liked Thorus's voice. He sounded like a real tough warrior.

I once failed his quest to see how he reacted, and it was quite funny. The only time I ever heard him really get mad.

@ Rubix3: This is the first I've heard of the hero being a different actor in the sequel. Ironically enough, I just played a little bit of the original Gothic today in order to reaquaint myself with the story, and I noticed immediately that the hero's voice was different! You would never notice (at least I didn't) unless you played both games on the same day or whatever. Anyway, I'm not certain what to believe - They are both SO similar I would be hard pressed to believe it was two different people, but maybe...

Interestingly I read an on-line review about Gothic 2 that was generally favorable, but one complaint the author had was about the hero's voice. He said something to the effect of "This guy sounds so stupid that if the fate of the earth depended on him in real life, we'd be totally screwed."

Personally I think the reviewer was smoking swampweed when he wrote this because he obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.

Anyway, my thoughts on the rest of the characters:

Diego from G1: Definitely best voice actor - sorely missed in sequel - in fact almost ruined his character for me.

Xardas: Coolest voice in the game. Especially in the Dragon reincarnations. And Onar's part? This actor sounds like he enjoys his job. A must have for #3.

Milten: I think his voice is perfect for his part. A mage shouldn't sound like a big bad warrior - that's Gorn's job - also very well done.

Lee: I was very dissappointed with the actor who played Lee in the sequel. It was a noticeably different voice than in the first game, and sounded weak and un- heroic. That's bad, because IMHO Lee is the second most heroic character in the game. If they need to change any voice for G3, this is the one.

About the accents: I also was surprised and a little put off by the american accents in the first game, especially the extremely 'southern' accents by some of the diggers. 'Dusty' comes to mind. I got used to it of course, and totally expected it in the sequel so no surprises there. I agree that they do make for an interesting formula for the game, and might not be as good without them.

It's what KaiRo told me last year, face to face. I'm afraid we'll have to take his word for it - he was supervising the English language voice recordings.

I'm pretty sure its same voice actor for Lee in G1 and G2. I recently re-played G1 and can confirm this.

You're right. The combination of "average joe" voices in a fantasy setting *iS* one of the things that makes Gothic work. As an American, the fact that many of the voice actors use American dialects and colloquialisms makes them feel more "real" to me. I know there are a lot of bad stereotypes about [American] southerners and such. But being from the south myself I found it refreshing that a game would use some people with that accent in a non-mocking manner.

Definitely. And one thing people always seem to forget about the south of the USA, is that there is a lot of power and money involved - fully comparable to the northern part of the USA. A few movies that illustrate that, are "The Fifth Element" and "Casino." In the 5th, the main antagonist (Gary Oldman - from London) has a HEAVY southern accent - it does this character well, and I think of him as a commanding oil tycoon from this day, while he's a planetary conqueror and owner in the movie. In "Casino," they illustrate that a southern business man has even more power over Vegas than the MOB! Sergio in Gothic 2 reminds me of Gary Oldman from "The 5th Element" - and I found them both intimidating.

Of course, there are negative stereotypes about both the north and the south of the USA. I'm from the north, but I never ever discount the unity and power of the south. In many ways, in a story, an evil character from Texas of Georiga is much more intimidating than the gangsta from Chicago, or the big shot from New York. Seems as though there's more history behind the south, and that empowers southerners.

It's traditional (and enjoyable) to put Old English accents on characters using bows and swords, but it breaks the rules putting modern American accents on them. It was a nice change imho. Not to mention, the variation of American accents keeps it fresh.

That's cool that you met him. I'd like to meet anyone involved with Gothic - and I'd do ANYTHING to be one of the voice actors. If I could only get my foot in the door.................................
