Middle Earth Online - New Newsletter

Vivendi and Turbine have kicked off a new Middle Earth Online newsletter. This monthly feature will cover all sorts of new information starting off with this ones feature on player housing. There's also an exclusive screenshot, featured fan site and so on.

Frightening

Does anybody else get a sinking feeling in his (or her) stomach at the thought of Turbine creating MEO?

AC2 was pretty to look at, but a pretty bad joke to play. It brought absolutely nothing new to the concept of MMORPG except the vault campaigns, that in my opinion were still a dismal failure because of the horrible gameplay balancing they did. I don't really have much hope, or see any signs, that they might be bringing something new, or revolutionary to MMORPG gameplay with MEO.

And generally, just how wise was it to do a MEO anyway? MMORPGs are about a lot of things, but playing a hero is *not* one of them (at least not yet). The Tolkein books are entirely about heroes. Picture it now: You, a noble elf, with a party of three others, stand feet planted on a path leading through a forest haunted with giant spiders. Your purpose? To discover the truth of whispers of a new evil arising deep in the woods. Thirty seconds down the path, a nest of giant spiders has already been camped by a party of 14 year olds talking about their Friday night plans waiting for the spiders to respawn so they can make it to level X. They're broadcasting their chat to another party of 5 that waits just of of sight, beyond a bend in the path, where they've camped yet *another* giant spider spawn. Then a half-dead dwarf comes running down the path, dragging in a train behind him the Queen of the Spiders and her retinue. After making it out of the forest alive he turns to you and say "Dude, we've been camping the Queen all night. In order to solve the quest you just need to do X, Y, and Z, and you'll need this item--here, take one."

In the meantime, The first level human ranger (one among a crowd of hundreds of human rangers whose names all start with Ara.... or Str...), heir to the glory of Numenor, runs around on a field killing rats trying to make it to second level.

All the while, of the vast hoarde of hobbit characters created, only one aspires to anything more than chicken herding...

Earendil indeed...

I agree completely. Turbine scares me. They have the best two licenses for mmorpgs ever and i bet they are going to mess at least one of them up. I highly doubt that i will even touch MEO unless its years from now when they have the whole map prepared. Its just lame that they chose to make 1/4th of the freaking map and put-off the rest for expansions. Thats just stupid and makes them appear incompetent. Dragon Empires and a few other upcoming mmorpgs sound so much more attractive to me than an MEO made by Turbine.

also, they should have made a really good single-player CRPG out of Tolkien's world. now all we have that are good are 1) the new movies, and 2) the original books. all the software related to Tolkien STINKS.

I wonder if any idea for an MMORPG is ever "wise"... By the way, I'm not sure that having Turbine as a developper gives me any kind of feelings, positive or negative. I mean, on one hand I feel that it's better that a company with some background takes the torch as oppsed to some nameless new company with delusions of grandeur...

On the other hand, I don't think that any company at all could ever live up to what we expect/want from a possible Middle Earth game of any kind. This is, unfortunately, another SWG in the making, where people will be heavily disapointed regardless of the eventual quality of the game. Whether the developer is Turbine, Sony, EA, or whoever else you can think of, you'd still have the same "sinking feeling". You have that feeling because, as you said, you have trouble with the fact that there will be a MEO at all.

And I agree with you to a certain degree that MEO will be very anti-hero by the nature of the medium, which is not exactly what Tolkien's world is about... IN THE BOOKS! But forget about the books for a second, and look instead at the Universe in Tolkien's lore, and you might see where the possibilities are for a great MMORPG there. They have the world, they have everything all worked up in there. But it will be a tricky game to develop, I'll give you that...
