I'm at the point in the old camp where I have to choose between guard or mage. Can I switch back and forth after I choose? I want to play as a warrior type character with some magic...maybe up to 4th circle. Can I choose mage now and revert back to a fighter later on? |

Well a mage can do loads of distance damage but once they get close to you you're dead
But you can always be a fighter, but since a mage requires a lot of mana and a fighter requires a lot of str. you won't be as good a fighter as you would have been if you had concentrated on your str.

Join the sect camp, they can learn up to the 4th circle and train in weapons handling. Templars are naturally fighter mages (or so I hear). But you will still have that problem of splitting your skill points between mana and strength.

Thats what I did. I joined the sect camp and just learned magic up to 4th circle. This way I can use the rings for distant damage.
I only increased my strength a little to use the 1h Broadsword. I am currently learning to master 1h. There are no more animals left in the forest and at this level it takes a lot of experience to progress.
I am up to the Focus Stones search. I think I can get a lot of xp on these quests. |

The question about guards. The first time I played I was a guard. Later on in the game you may have the chance to switch to mage. But to learn magic up to the 5th circle and beyond you would need a ton of skill points.
Circle
1= 10 skill points
2= 20
3= 30
Get the picture? Unless you saved a ton of skill points it will be dificult.
Some options are not to spend skill points on dexterity and strength. Use rings to get you enough strength to use the Orc Hammer or a good 1h sword.
Since magicians magic can be used at long range, don't bother learning Bow Or Crossbow.

I don't think you can have it both ways, you can be a guard and use runes, (one time); but for pure in-the-face combat, well then its guards.
As for me, I like to look in an enemy's eyes when I cram my sword up their arse

Ah you CAN be both(kind of)!
When youre ready for the choice, talk to Corristo. Tell him youre ready to take the oath.
DO NOT GO TO THE PENTAGRAM YET!!!!
Talk to Thorus now. Join the guards. Become an army of one. Learn two-handed combat. Learn Crossbows early from Scorpio(if you want). Get stuff from Stone and the other guy. When you realize being a guard is boring, go back to the pentagram and swear(not curse)to Corristo that you will uphold the ways of the flamer! |

Yes; but what I was implying is that guards take strength and mages take mana (tons of it). Gothic doesn't have a Paladin. To be effective you have to be a strong guard, or a very powerful mage. You can't be both (without cheating somehow) because of the skill points, or lack of skill points.

oh no!
I meant, its not important to be a 6th circle mage. Breath of death is useless and Uriziel is better WITH the gem. However its nice to at least get up to circle 4, and be a fighter-mage WITHOUT cheating!!
