And I remembered Tokyo.

Whoops.

Where were Japanese levels in a Deus Ex type game I played recently? No One Lives Forever 2 maybe?

Yes, Deus is definitely Hong Kong, which is obviously Chinese, not Japanese. ")

I don't mind both more or less Eastern influrnces in video games (PC/Consoles), as long as game makers are able to present them in an interesting ways.

I am not sure how much Western game developer capable to understand the culture and thinking of Easterners (Far or Middle Eastern countries). There are danger for picking up various stereotypes and then making generalisations..., or interpret them according to Western understanding and perspective.

I remember reading some very interesting Middle Eastern stories, Islamic myths and legends; and then the rich folk tales, history, pseudo-history of Middle Kingdom (China) of war, of love & terrible betrayal, heroism, etc.

It's all very interesting, but i doubt many 8-14 years old kids that play video games would care about such things, something that so foreign.

Edited. Arghh!! why i always making endless spelling mistakes...

I generally prefer something stylistic but still more real world looking than anime styles. As far as eastern influences, i definitely like it. i've always been a follower of the medieval, but games that can use both the old world euro and eastern elements rank higher for me in terms of interesting graphics.

While I agree with the majority of the posts in this tread and prefer a medievil setting, I admit I thoroughly enjoyed the eastern setting and Samuris in Summoner. I don't go for the anime style at all - huge eyes and no noses on childish looking people are the stuff of nightmares
As someone who daily haunts RPG lists of eBay in several countries, I notice that the Samuri game "Throne of Darkness" is always listed yet very rarely sells - is the game truely that bad?

Not bad, no. It's very much party based Diablo.

You have samurai and they chop things up. Many, many things.

It's really not that bad, but it's more tactical than RPG... though it has RPG elements for certain.

As for anime... well... there are styles, you know, just like western art.

Try

Aahh, a turn-based Diablo - everything I loath in a game I DEFFINATELY won't be buying it then, lol.
Talking about styles of art, I'm curretnly playing Dark Earth (an older RPG-type game for a rental company so I can give them a review of it) and the art style has Arabic elements and the close-up character shots are right out of a comic The character you play has been damaged by a disease that disfigures him like acid, and quite honestly it was difficult to tell the difference between the before and after shots, lol. Suffice to say I don't like it - in fact I can't see myself finishing it. I'm about 3/4 through and have a definate 'feel' for the game so I feel that's enough to write a fair review - I won't take into account that I seem to have hit a bug and can't do what the plot has obviously led me to do. (If anyone's played Dark Earth, how do I get Arkhan to go down the ladder into the sewers, and put the air-helmet on? He won't do either for me.)
Anyway... I've gone off topic again I seem to have a knack for doing that, lol.

Throne of Darkness oozed mediocrity.

The 600x800 max screen resolution made the game feel too close up for my tastes.

The gameplay was too frantic, just not very well done.

The only thing I can say good about the game is the unique item generation, ala Diablo.

Overall not recommended, but it for under 10 dollars if you're desperate for something to play.

Maybe this will be ignored or i'll be hated because of this, but I think the cool thing in Japanese (not chinese) RPGs is that they are not as serious as western ones... I like this because I play games to relax, and not just to chase the end...
