Anyone using a Radeon 8500 with Morrowind? Some questions...

How is your performance? And what's up with antialiasing on the Radeon?
Does it work? Going from none to 4X didn't seem to remove any of the jaggies at all, not just in Morrowind but in other games too. I'm using the newest drivers and WinXP. Is FSAA disabled in the drivers? I just upgraded from a GeForce 3 ti200 but I'm not impressed at all with this card. My 3dmark 2001SE score jumped by over 1000 points but my game performance hasn't seemed to increase at all and I can't live without FSAA!

Nevermind, I already took it back to the store. I hope ATI's next line of cards work better than the Radeon series.

I have a 8500LE 128meg OC'd to 280/280 and running the game super smooth, over 15 fps constantly except when first entering a city. I'm only running an Athlon 800 too...

My 8500 works beatifully with MW. I suspect that your card was suffering from the dreaded 'operator error'. You probably turned AA on in OpenGL - not terribly useful for a Direct3D game. If your concentration span is so short then you might want to consider returning MW as well.
My AA works fine, and anything over 2x is a waste. 16x AF is also rather tasty, and gives zero framerate hit.
Of couse you can get a GF4, and if you download a hack you'll even be able to use AF in Direct3D - which is essential since the GF3/4's AA blurs the crap out of textures and needs the AF to clean it up. Just use the lowest AF setting or it will be like walking through jello. NVidia's AA and AF suck.

I also have a Radeon 8500, 64mb thow. MW runs smooth on it, and I havent experienced any problems with it. AA is at 2x and the graphics are fairly crisp to say the least.

BTW, I also upgraded from a Ti200 and I can very much tell the difference in quality.

I've got a Radeon 8500 64 meg, 1.2 gig AMD Thunderbird, 600+ megs of ram and a Audigy sound card. I get huge variations on frame rate. Anywhere from -10-60+ and above. I've messed with all the setting on the vid card, running latest drivers, defragged drive, .ini file changes agp apature 2x'd, unload systray, disable internet connection, safedisk modified exe..etc..etc..

When I right click to load inventory it can take 5-10 seconds easy before anything appears. Constant load stutter when walking; long enough at times that at times it seems the game is frozen, then some seconds later "bing" it's done and you can move again.

I have nearly the same set up you do. athlon 1200 radeon 8500 64 mg. 256 megs of ram.
I also had the exact same problems you did... the stuttering.. and taking 5 seconds to open inventory.

I now get a minimum of 20 fps from these changes, and instant inventory.

... Use the modified exe to unload safedisk
... Turn off Pixel Shaded Water
... Use medium view distance
... Stopped windows from managing my swap file.. I created a swap file
of 512 megs on a separate drive on my computer.

I hope it helps.... It is the only combination I have tried that made a huge difference in the stuttering and especially the long periods between opening inventory and doors.

I use a software called "rage3d tweak"
Easy to use. I checked most options like "using Zbufferx" and stuff like that. Options you cannot access to from windows.

It makes the game smoother especially whe I fight up close to a mob. Before, when I was fighting a fire andronach (or whatever) the game became very slow. Now it's perfect. In balmora I dont see much difference. For indoors it's much quicker.

One cool option you can have access to with this rage3d tweak software is that you can have windows turn off your wallpaper prior to loading a game. You save lots of memory.

Try it, it's free

Took it back? So it's ATI's fault that you can't RTFM. In either case, you're not going to be able to use 4x FSAA on this game unless you want 640*480 resolution. I hate people who troll good products.

I'll bet that's your mom and dad's address too

Bitching about the 8500 being a bad product because you cant figure out how it works will get you flamed - just the way it is.

Pornflake eh? ......very original. Never heard that one before.

The drivers for the Radeon are f*ckin pathetic. If they weren't, then they wouldn't be such a topic of discussion all over the internet. I'm not an ATI hater, I'm just stating a fact. FSAA on the Radeon is also pathetic. I should know, I swapped a Radeon 8500 and a Geforce 3 in and out of my system several times in one day just to compare the two. When you turn FSAA on with a Geforce the difference is huge. I used 4x on the Radeon but could barely even tell. The funny thing is, the Radeon took a way bigger performance hit than the Geforce. This was using the newest ATI drivers.(6071) I don't have anything against ATI, but they have some catching up to do before they can compete with Nvidia. So before you run your mouth anymore, do yourself a favor. Go out and buy yourself a Geforce 3 TI 200(get them for around $100 now) and check out a quality product.

P.S. Circut City has a 14 day return policy on computer parts.

ok... heres my indifferent input on this. I have owned both the Ti200 and the 8500. They both have their good points and bad points. ATi's driver did suck ass when i fist got the 8500 last November, but the 6071's [at least for me] are kicking major ass. Morrowind runes completely smooth with only the safedisk crack. The AA with the 8500 is not quite as good as the Ti200, but then again, i could give a shit less about it. I kept the 8500 over the Ti200 because the image quality was far superior in the 2D aspect of things. Also, at the time, the Ti200 would tear through games that the 8500 would chop up on, but still i kept it. the 8500 hasnt even reached its full potential. Driver releases have become closer together, they are getting better... in the end, its all just a matter of opinion, im just patient [or stupid] enough to wait i guess.

Also, when you were sapping out the cards over and over, did you completely remove the drivers [registery keys & files] and all ATi and nVidia software? Ive had cases where the video card will run like shit even if the previous one seems to be removed, and the only way to get top performance is a format.

=Fixed. Jaz=
