I have been recommended by the guy at the front gate, the Baal who you impress with a sleep spell, and the Baal who you impress by bringing a new student. How do I get the Baal at the temple to sponsor me. |

Forget him. You need Baal Orun, not the temple guy.
Baal Orun oversees the weed mashers. Talk to a masher named Ghorim and this will get you on your way to wearin' the robe. |

There is a Baal you can impress easily in the New Camp. He's in the living area talking to some rouges. All you have to do to impress him is deal some drugs for him, and you profit in the process. |

When you see three guys plunging weed-mashers into buckets, overseen by Baal Orun, these are the guys you need. Walk in the camp's main entrance and keep to the right, you'll eventually find them.
Talk to Ghorim and he will tell you to get Harlok, a lazy novice, to take over for him.
This sets things in motion.
Another way is to go to the New Camp and talk to the weed-selling novice there, and he will help you gain Baal Tyon's support. But there's no need for this unless you just want the experience.
